Random Musings of a Curious Mind

Do It Yourself

I don't know about you, but I seriously prefer not paying someone to do something that I can learn to do myself. Especially if it involves any of the trades - carpentry, plumbing, painting, etc. Frankly, I would rather not pay a plumber $30.00 an hour to snake a drain.

A few years ago, I was living in a really great apartment - 2 bedrooms + den, great living room/dining room space. The master bedroom was bigger than my current living room! Just a lovely place . . . except for the cracked and ugly kitchen floor. After a lot of begging on our part, the apartment complex agreed to supply vinyl flooring, if we did the installation. Cool, huh? Peel-and-stick floor tiles are a snap to put down. Right?

Well, they are when you have a perfect floor to which you can attach them. If you don't have a perfectly level, smooth floor, I found out later, it's a hideous waste of time and energy. Within weeks, the pretty new tiles were not only cracking in the same spots as the previous flooring, some of them were coming up at the corners. Since we had 4 cats at that time, the lifting tile corners became a great source of feline amusement.

Had I found DoItYourself.com back then, I would have known that it was critical to correct the problems with the floor before we put down new tiles. I also would have known that, despite claims to the contrary, my ex-husband didn't actually know what he was doing. As they say, knowledge is power.

Just imagine - a site where you can get tips and instruction for virtually any home improvement project. So, just because you don't know how to lay vinyl flooring today, doesn't mean that you won't tomorrow. DoItYourself.com has thousands of articles and over 100 active forums on several do-it-yourself home improvement topics. You can even get DVDs to walk you, step-by-step, through whatever repairs or improvements you're planning.

Imagine how terrific it would be to have a deck where you could sit with a cup of coffee in the morning and watch the sunrise or entertain friends and family on a warm summer evening. Don't know how to build a deck? Not a problem. This site will help you learn. It explains the terminology, provides a list of tools and materials that you'll need, and then walks you through each step until you're sitting on your deck, sipping lemonade.

It just doesn't get any easier.
