Random Musings of a Curious Mind

"It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

It's Ok . . .

Mark was playing a game today and one of the comments that came up was just so funny, I had to post it!

"It's okay to talk to yourself; just don't interrupt!"

Which reminds me:

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!"

Charitable Donations for Free

While traversing the Internet recently, I found some amazing items on the Humane Society of the United States' website that I just had to share.Continue reading: Charitable Donations for Free

  • Everyone I know has a cell phone, including our two sons. But what I didn't know was that there is a service, called Humane Wireless. And I quote: "The Humane Society of the United States has teamed up with Working Assets to bring you a unique phone service that provides an amazing 10%* of all phone charges to protect animals ? at no extra cost to you!"
    • I checked out the plans and the prices, and was amazed to find that there was absolutely no difference between their rates and those of our current service. (Unfortunately, we're in the middle of a 2-year contract, so we're not eligible to change carriers.) If you're in the market for a new wireless service, or were waiting to take the cell phone plunge ~ why not check out Humane Wireless? You know you're going to use that cell phone. Wouldn't it be terrific to help protect animals while you're doing it?

  • Just when I was about to write off Microsoft, I found out about the Microsoft i'm Initiative. And I quote: "i?m is a new initiative from Windows Live Messenger?. Every time you start a conversation using i?m, Microsoft shares a portion of the program's advertising revenue with some of the world's most effective organizations dedicated to social causes. We've set no cap on the amount we'll donate to each organization. The sky's the limit."
    • It's incredibly easy to sign up, especially if you already use Windows Live Messenger?. The Initiative supports 10 organizations, from the American Red Cross to UNICEF, and all you have to do is chat, which you know you're going to do anyway. Right? Why not show your support? I did.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

I am incredibly embarrassed that I did not know that The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum existed.

Before you say "Okay - I know that the Nazis tries to kill off all the Jews, " you need to visit this site. (You also need to revisit history, but that's an entirely different blog.)

This is an amazing website that deals with not only WWII, but also Armenia, Sudan, Darfur, and Chechnya, among other areas of the world.

If you believe that what is happening in the world today is bordering on what Hitler started in 1939, as I do, please visit this incredible website.

As expressed by George Santayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Is this the legacy we want to leave our children?

Isn't Life Strange?

With thanks to the Moody Blues - Life is definitely strange!! (Check out the lyrics! I just love 'em.)

We recently had a knock on our door ( 1 of 76 apartments in the complex, BTW), asking for a person with the name of our wireless network. ??!!

Yup!! - and it went something like this:

(knock, knock)
Frankie: Someone's at the door.
Me: (opening the door) Yes?
Him: Are you ******* ? (name of our network, not listed for obvious reasons)
Me: What? (Shocked, to say the least that he knows this name)
Him: Are you ******* ?
Me: No.
Him: Do you know ******* ?
Me: That's the name of our password-protected wireless network. (Yes, I actually do say such things.)
Him: Yeah. How do I get on it?
Me: You Can't! It's private and password protected. Don't EVEN try to get on it. (I've been known to be rather rude. I know - it's shocking!!)
(door closes somewhat loudly)

Now, one would think that my first thought would have been: "How in the name of all that is holy did you end up at my door?" But I didn't think of that until after I closed the door in his rather befuddled face.

Mark, who was in the middle of cooking dinner, came out of the kitchen to find out who I was talking to, since he hadn't heard the knock at the door. I explained the conversation, shook my head in amazement, and (pretty much) wrote it off as another oddity in life. (This, BTW, was the point in time where I started wondering where he'd gotten the idea to ask us about the wireless network.)

Fast forward through dinner.

We are relaxing, watching television or on computers, when . . .

(knock, knock)
(Mark answers door)
Her: We live in apt. ***.
(Mark looks unimpressed)
Her: My boyfriend has a computer. Can he get on your network?

. . . the rest of the conversation involves Mark explaining that "to get internet access, one must pay for internet access" and me, in the background, barking about staying off our network! (For those of you familiar with 'CATS' - yes, you can hear me all over the park.)

I kid you not - this actually happened. Apparently, it made enough of an impression that I'm still marvelling at the stupidity of both conversations.

And I still don't know how they found us.

So, Yes!! Life is Strange!! or, if you live in my universe, Where did all of the IDIOTS come from and how do we send them back!!!??? Starting with the one that currently occupies the White House! (oooh, did I say that out loud?)

Have a terrific day and don't forget to visit us at http://www.jmarkafghans.com - we have made a slew of changes this month.

We've been known to have contests, offering amazing prizes, for those who can find the most changes in a given month. If you don't visit, how will you know what changed?

God Bless.
