Random Musings of a Curious Mind

Safety of Plastics

I was reading this article earlier Safety of Plastics Chemical Questioned. It's absolutely terrifying!

Despite more than 100 published studies by government scientists and university laboratories that have raised health concerns about a chemical compound that is central to the multibillion-dollar plastics industry, the Food and Drug Administration has deemed it safe largely because of two studies, both funded by an industry trade group.

The agency says it has relied on research backed by the American Plastics Council because it had input on its design, monitored its progress and reviewed the raw data.

Isn't that just typical of our government, put our safety at risk based on information from an organization with a vested interest in keeping a product on the market. In fact, I recently saw a report on baby bottles that scared the daylights out of me.

We always told our kids to wash new plastic bottles - before use - to remove any residual chemicals. Now, I hear that these baby bottles actually give off more chemicals the more they are washed. To be specific, after 10 trips through the dishwasher, the bottles in question gave off 10 times the amount of chemicals as they did before they were washed.

There are, apparently, natural alternatives - if you can believe the ads at the bottom of the article. I think it's time that we - as consumers - stop giving our money to companies and groups that are lining their pockets at the cost of our - and our childrens' - health.
