Protecting Montana's Grizzlies

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

The Alliance for the Wild Rockies (AWR) filed a lawsuit, on Monday, in a challenge to "the U.S. Forest Service's decision to go forward with three road-building and logging projects in occupied habitat for the endangered Cabinet-Yaak grizzly bear. Grizzly Bear Sow and CubAccording to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Cabinet-Yaak grizzly bear is almost certainly going extinct and roads pose the most imminent threat to these bears."

Do these government departments / bureaus ever talk to - or listen to - each other?

Here you have the FWS - part of the Department of the Interior - whose "... mission is, working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats ..." stating that building roads through the Cabinet-Yaak area is contributing to the decimation of the grizzly population. A population, by the way, that is limited to only 5 areas in the western United States and is estimated (April, 2007) to number less than 50 individuals in what is known as the Cabinet-Yaak Recovery Zone. This zone consists of the Cabinet Mountains and Yaak Valley.

Grizzly Bear Sow and Three CubsNow, we add the USFS, part of the Department of Agriculture - but funded through the Department of the Interior. Their mission "... is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations." Doesn't sound incompatible to me? And yet, in practice, the left hand certainly has different goals than the right hand (non-politically speaking).

The USFS projects, which AWR is challenging, include:

  • Commercial thinning on 780 acres, regeneration harvest on 398 acres, prescribed burning only on 691 acres, 5.5 miles of new permanent roads, and 2 miles of temp roads in Little Beaver Drainage;
  • Commercial timber harvest on 2,506 acres and prescribed fire on 3,148 acres in Miller West Fisher; and
  • Timber harvest, prescribed burning, pre-commercial thin, and access mgmt changes in the Grizzly Planning Subunit.

The full complaint (PDF file) can be found on the AWR website.

Hand Dryers and H1N1 - Fearmongering or Fact?

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

I don't know if you've seen the latest email about preventing the flu. It showed up recently in my mailbox, which - naturally - caused me to say "Yeah, right! Here we go again!" Without a second thought, I went to my favorite online resources and expected to find that this was just another hoax.

Well, maybe and maybe not. It's a newly circulating email and the regular investigators are still investigating. So, for now, I'm on my own.

The email states that using hand dryers, instead of paper towels, just blows the germs around. This, according to the message, increases the spread of H1N1 in public places. It's not the dryers themselves, apparently, but the unclean filters in the hand dryers. Okay, makes sense - I suppose.

Hand dryers pull air from the room, heat it, filter it, and blow it onto wet hands. If the filters are dirty, they - theoretically - aren't doing much more than pulling germs from the air, heating them, and blowing them onto wet hands. But ... and here is where my skepticism jumps into the mix ... does the heating element get hot enough to destroy bacteria? Does the 'crud,' rumored to be collecting in the filters, consist of non-cremated bacteria, i.e., active bacteria that can spread disease? Or is it simply dust, etc. from the room air, toasted into a harmless, albeit gross, amalgam of schmutz?

Not to mention, aren't we breathing all of that schmutz while we're standing at the sink pretending to scrub our hands? What makes paper towels so much more antibacterial? Aren't they housed in the same room with all of that bacteria-laden air we're breathing and blowing around? Five'll getcha ten that those itsy-bitsy germs can work themselves into the paper towel container like a mouse through a crack in the wall.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what the experts have to say. In the meantime? I have an overwhelming urge to go wash my hands!

Stress Kills

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

According to The American Institute of Stress, "Stress is difficult for scientists to define because it is a subjective sensation associated with varied symptoms that differ for each of us. In addition, stress is not always a synonym for distress. Situations like a steep roller coaster ride that cause fear and anxiety for some can prove highly pleasurable for others. Winning a race or election may be more stressful than losing but this is good stress."

No two people will, probably, agree on what is stressful, at any level. To me, a rollercoaster ride is highly stressful. To Mark, it's a great time. There are common life changes that tend to produce stress for most people. These changes are stressful, though some are considered positive events and some are, quite often, negative.
  • Getting a new job
  • Losing a job
  • Getting married
  • Getting divorced
  • Buying a house
  • Home foreclosure
It's not, however, the one-time stressors that are most dangerous. Losing a job is never easy, but it can be the push needed to find a better position. Divorce, while difficult, is a health step when leaving an abusive relationship. Signing those mortgage papers is a frightening committment, almost immediately balanced by the pride of ownership.

When life is filled with unending stress - e.g., a bad job or marriage, extended unemployment, or chronic poor health - eventually it becomes almost impossible to cope. Living daily, often hourly, on the edge from pain, worry, or fear is physically and emotionally damaging. A combination of individual stressors can do the same physical and emotional damage. Getting divorced, losing a job, losing a home, and becoming ill - without serious support and coping mechanisms - are probably more than a person can realistically handle.

This week, we've seen graphic examples of people unable to deal with their personal stresses. One, a religious and medical man, faced daily horrors and was about to be deployed to the midst of those horrors. The other was a man who simply had too many things go wrong, without relief.

Why they chose to arm themselves and shoot innocent people is beyond me. But, I do know, that when excessive stress continues unabated, anything is possible.

Spam Email - Do Not Unsubscribe!

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Got an interesting spam email the other day. It was offering a chance to buy email addresses at the rate of about $0.50/million - or something equally ridiculous. Sounds cheap, right? The message then mentioned that there were about 500 million addresses in the database.

Even if any of the numbers were accurate, that's about $250.00! No longer inexpensive - at least not to me. Presuming, to begin with, that I was in the market for buying email addresses.

As I continued to read, the message noted that the database has a 60% bounce rate. That means - at best - only 40% of the addresses are valid. In other words, I would be paying $250.00 (or more) for $100.00 (or less) worth of information. Just keeps getting worse.

The next caveat in the email was, to paraphrase "You need to send an opt-in message, before using any of the addresses; as you always should anyway." Just good business practice, right? Well, maybe that was the point . . . and maybe not.

At the bottom, the very, very bottom of the spam I received was a link to unsubscribe from further mailings by this particular spammer. Bingo! I now knew that my email address was in that for-sale database that this yutz was trying to scam me into buying.

This message was a fishing expedition! If I was foolish enough to unsubscribe, the spammers would have immediate confirmation - from the source - that my email address was valid!

I blocked the sender and deleted the message - with extreme prejudice! And recommend that you do the same!!

National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. A time when we stop and consider the quality of our lives and the lives of our loved ones. What type of memory loss is a normal part of aging? And what memory changes may be a sign of something more serious?

To help answer those important questions, the Alzheimer's Association offers
The 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimers:

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
  3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure
  4. Confusion with time or place
  5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
  6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
  7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
  8. Decreased or poor judgment
  9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
  10. Changes in mood and personality
The information on these pages also explains the difference between typical age-related memory changes and the changes that may signal the onset of Alzheimer's Disease.

Another health issue, related to Alzheimer's or any disabling condition, is Caregiver Stress. Unless you are/have been a caregiver for a seriously ill friend or loved one, it is difficult to imagine the range of emotions and stress that caregivers experience. To that end, the Alzheimer's Association has provided a short quiz to help caregivers determine their stress level and find the resources they need to care for themselves.

I have been a caregiver and I have worked with support groups. The first piece of advice we give to those caring for seriously ill or disabled relatives is: "Don't forget to care for yourself!"

Weight Loss Supplement for Men

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

I was re-reviewing some weight loss information and was surprised to find a couple of new products. One, in particular, caught my eye. It's supposed to be for men only, as it contains testosterone boosters. Hmmmmm?! Is that a good thing?

Naturally, I had to do some investigation into the wisdom of boosting hormones indiscriminately. And, naturally, this turned out to be potentially risky. But, not necessarily bad.

There's a good chance that taking a supplement with these hormone boosters won't actually do much for testosterone levels. The ingredients aren't testosterone; they simply claim to stimulate hormone production. A claim, by the way, that hasn't actually been proven in clinical studies. (Although, there was mention of a 'stimulant' effect in lab animals.)

Since testosterone is, as one source explained, the original anabolic steroid, the side-effects of increasing production are remarkably similar. They include irrational behavior, sudden rage, 'shrinkage' of certain body parts, and anxiety. Combined with the caffeine boost in some of these supplements, not a good idea.

As always - questionable choice, questionable value. Not to mention, one of the review sites claimed a lifetime moneyback guarantee that, in fact, doesn't exist. The primary site for the product states, quite clearly, that they are the best so they don't give refunds. Rather interesting attitude.

Been sampling their own supplement, perhaps?!

RedHeart 'Fiesta' Yarn Colors

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Every so often, I review all the yarn pages on the website for changes. Colors come and go randomly. Usually without warning.

This month, the change was a bit more dramatic. It seems that Coats and Clark, the manufacturers of the RedHeart line of yarns, revised part of their website. All of the 'Fiesta' color swatches we had posted were moved.

If you haven't checked our chart of available colors lately, please drop by and take a peek. Three colors were retired. But four new colors were created. (The two darker ones - Harvest and Coffee - are great options for Fall projects.)

Great fun!

Enough is Enough, is Too Much

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

I have been avoiding the Heene story. My first thought, seeing the breaking news story, was "Yeah, right!" And, with that thought, we changed channels. Who'd have thought we'd still be hearing about this disfunctional family? Certainly not me.

The more I hear and read about this man's desperate need for media attention, the more I wonder why everyone doesn't just shut up about him. It's obvious that he'll do anything - including encouraging his children to lie - to get his face on TV. By continuing to pay attention, he wins and receives the message that it's okay.

Frankly, I worry for the kids. It doesn't appear that they have even one responsible parent. How sad!

So Sadly True

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Every Sunday night / Monday morning, I read News of the Weird. For those of you who have missed this column, it's a compilation of really odd and/or stupid news stories compiled during the previous week. Some will make you laugh. Some will make you shake your head. But, some will make you want to strangle someone.

For example, in Can't Possibly Be True for the most recent week:

Child "Protection" Caseworkers: In November 2008, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services returned an infant to her mother's care two weeks after the woman had, according to police, left her in a toilet bowl. (Three months later, following further investigation, the woman was charged with attempted murder, and the baby was taken away.) [Belleville News-Democrat, 9-17-09]

National Women's Law Center found that the laws of eight states permit insurance companies to deny health coverage to a battered spouse (as a "pre-existing condition," since batterers tend to be recidivists), according to a September report by Kaiser Health News. [MSNBC, 10-7-09]

Texas child agency caseworkers assigned a low priority (non-"immediate" risk) after a home visit in May in Arlington revealed that a violent, long-troubled mother routinely left three children, ages 6, 5 and 1, home alone all day while she was at work. In September, the 1-year-old was found dead. [Dallas Morning News, 10-2-09]
It never ceases to amaze me that people, with no clue whatsoever, are put in positions of authority over the lives of others. Heaven help us all!

Will Your Kid Get That Degree?

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

I stumbled across an interesting news story today. It discusses which high school students are most likely to graduate from college, based on a 10-year study of over 200,000 freshman.

The news, published in "Crossing the Finish Line," points to demographic factors - rather than hard work, good grades, and intelligence - as the strongest indicator of success or failure in post-high school endeavors. Gender, race, and parental education carry more weight than student effort or brains. If true, a rather sad situation.

In a nutshell, kids whose parents didn't go to or finish college, who come from a disadvantaged background, regardless of how hard they study or how brilliant they are, are much less likely to make it through four years of college.

Obviously, there will always be exceptions - thank, heaven! But, as one of those statistics, it's very disheartening to know that not much has changed in the 35 years since I went to - and didn't graduate from - college.
