JMark Afghans' Latest Zazzle Designs
In celebration of my birthday or, perhaps, in lieu of a shopping frenzy, I spent yesterday on Zazzle coming up with new designs. And I can't wait to share!
There are a bunch of new products available on Zazzle, just taunting the designer in me. And, I'm sure, there are going to be a lot more designs to come. For now, let's start with a new image on a familiar product.

Sunset Reusable Tote Bag
This image is one of Arizona's amazing sunsets, taken from our parking lot. The colors are almost as beautiful in reality.
The tote is made from 100% cotton and has strong handles with reinforced stitching and measures 15.75"h x 15.25"w.
2012 Arizona Scenery Calendar
Spend a year in beautiful Arizona, with images that can only be found in the amazing Grand Canyon State.
This calendar comes in 13 different styles and 3 different sizes, with wire binding in 7 different colors.
And now for some brand new products:
Birds/Proverb Laptop Sleeve
Our latest Bird-in-a-Tree product also offers a humorous Chinese Proverb:
You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair.
Made from 100% neoprene, this waterproof laptop sleeve comes in 3 sizes to fit every laptop.
Purple/Aqua Star Gel Mousepad
Sometimes it's deliberate; sometimes it's an accident. This star is the result of flipping and combining copies of a single graphic image. Who knew?!
This contoured oval mousepad features an ergonomic gel-pad wrist support and non-skid black plastic base, and measures 9 ¼"x10 ½";.
Hope that you have as much fun with our newest designs as I did making them. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Newborn Hat, Sweater, & Shoes
This newborn set consists of a cloche-style (brimless) hat, sleeveless sweater, and lace-up bootie shoes.
Crocheted in 3-ply baby yarn, this set is soft, comfy for baby, and easy on and off. Designed for little girls, there is a cute little flower on the hat with a simple bow in the center.
The main color makes up the bodice, trim, and ties on the sweater, as well as the upper on the shoes. We've crocheted the soles and ties of the shoes in the accent color - and just love the look!
Because not everyone wants / likes more than one color, we offer the option of ordering the set in a single color. It's just as lovely. And, as always, shipping is included in the price.
Hats, Mittens, and Booties
These sweet, warm baby hats, mittens, and booties simply must be seen to be believed. They are so cute, no matter what color.
This newborn set consists of a cloche-style (brimless) hat, mittens, and booties. Crocheted in 3-ply baby yarn, this set is soft, comfy, and stretches just enough to fit all newborns. All ties are done in white.
The booties and mittens are appropriate for boys, girls, and when you don't know yet. Simply pick the right colors for your baby / grandbaby, and we'll take it from there.
The flower is optional, as you can see. For boys, simply check 'No' and we'll leave it off.
With winter on it's way, it's a good time to think about keeping warm. And, because these items are small, they ship within 3 days of your order - for Free.
We are so excited about these new items. Hopefully, you will be, too. Please let us know what you think.
Boxers or Briefs: Shopping for Your Guy
Since I'm running all over the 'Net, shopping for the kitchen and my half of the closet, it only seemed fair to shop for a couple of the men in my life. Our next-to-youngest prefers mens boxers over briefs and, frankly, some of these styles look pretty cool
- as a pair of run-around-the-house shorts ... for me.
I also, I must admit, love some of the tops that are available for girls. But, I'm trying, really hard, to remember I'm shopping for my guys.

Before you jump onto this site - Aèropostale, Inc - to go shopping for your men, the styles and sizes are (primarily) designed for ages 14-17. And the high school crowd will love these clothes. Trust me.
With that said, you can easily throw that caveat out the window - depending, and this is the important part, on the sizes you need.
It's just as easy to find chinos and polo shirts for your husband, as it is to shop for your son. At least, it was for me. Everything I looked at seemed well made and casually stylish.
Naturally, there are items that are too young for my 56-year-old hubby. There are also dozens of pants, shirts, and jeans that he could easily wear. Heck, half of the shirts in his closet could have come from Aèropostale.
Beautiful Clothes in Plus Sizes
To be perfectly honest, when I started looking at plus size suits, I really didn't expect to find my size in there. It was a bit of a shock, taking me back to the days when I shopped at a specialty store - for the tall items. In those days, plus sizes started at about size 18, not size 12.
But I guess times have changed.
Luckily, so have designs for larger sizes. Once I recovered from the idea that 12 is now a plus-size, I started really looking at the clothes. And, happily, these are not my mother's styles.

The worst thing about tall and big sizes for women has always been the frumpiness of the options. One trip through these pages will make it clear that not being a size 0 doesn't mean not dressing with style.
Admittedly, I don't wear suits anymore. But the separates are just amazing and really inspire me to update my wardrobe. Nothing super business-y or overly fancy would suit (pardon the pun) my current lifestyle.
But (for example) this gorgeous linen dress, over a pair of jeans or leggings would be a perfect dressed-up-casual outfit for dinner out, trips to the store, or an evening with family over the holidays. Just add some chunky jewelry and a little half-boot - c'est parfait.
And, please, don't get me started on the gorgeous sheaths and flared tank dresses. Those are so my favorite dress styles. It's nice to know that attractive styles are available in my size.
Baby Shower Teddies
I've been crocheting baby clothes lately, so finding Shari's baby shower collection seems pretty timely. Especially since two of the gifts I made recently were designed to be shower gifts.
Personally, I fell in love with this not-so-little shower bear.
It's two gifts in one - a cuddly 16-inch teddy bear and an adorable bath hoodie. Teddies are always great, but those hooded bath towels are a god-send for parents.
You've got a slippery little one, straight out of the bath. It's important to keep her warm and get her dry, as quickly and easily as possible. These towels will do that: slide the hood over his head, then wrap the long, wide towel around him.
Easy as that - your little teddy-baby is covered, warm, and dry.
Glacier Sunglasses
There is no time of year that you don't need sunglasses. If it isn't
blinding summer sun, it's the glare of light off white snow. Either
one can damage your eyes.
Pretty designer sunglasses may look great, but they may not be much
protection. Luckily, there are some, like these Glacier
sunglasses. They protect against all the UVs, are treated against
glare and fog, and have impact-resistant polarized lenses.
And, another lucky thing? These look great.
Restocking the Kitchen with OXO
Window-shopping is great fun. Even when you're shopping for windows. But, for me, window-shopping for kitchen utensils is just about the best fun I can imagine.
We've decided that we desperately need to replace some of our kitchen stuff. The spatulas we own are old and/or nylon. Neither is a good thing. The old one is falling apart and the nylon ones just don't get the job done - especially now that we're transitioning to cast-iron cookware.
Another problem? I've been making homemade biscuits and pie crusts, but I don't actually own a rolling pin or dough blender. Sure, I've gotten some very creative work-arounds going. Owning the actual, designed-for-this-purpose tools would be a serious time-saving improvement.
Then, we have the ultimate (for us) kitchen dream: a Mandoline. We have a deep fryer and love to make our own fries, chips, chimichangas, etc. But, cutting fries takes forever and cutting chips is just too labor-intensive with a knife and cutting board. Something that juliennes veggies for a salad, crinkle-cuts fries or chips, slices potatoes (evenly) for potatoes au gratin would just simply make our lives a thousand-percent easier.
So ... we're window-shopping and creating wish lists. If we only pick up an item or two every paycheck, we'll still be simplifying our cooking routines and, in the long run, cutting our food bills dramatically by making our own goodies.
I probably wouldn't consider this, if it weren't for OXO - their products are well-made, reliable, and durable. I can plan out my utensil / kitchen tool remodel with ease, knowing they'll still be around when I get to the end of the list.
And knowing that I won't be replacing the first OXO item before I've managed to buy the last one.
Personalized Shirts
It's not always easy to find a fun gift that isn't too casual. Most
times a personalized
tee shirt is amusing, but there's always the chance that the pun
won't seem nearly as funny to the recipient. Jokes about someone's
age, especially, can fall dramatically flat.
At thirty, my age was no big deal. At forty, I was still unfazed by
the passing years. But, and this is the oddest part, forty-two nearly
did me in. Acceptable gifts on those birthdays would have varied
widely.
There is, in my opinion, no woman who wouldn't love this rhinestone
initial t-shirt. It's simple, stylish, and goes anywhere. And - my
personal favorite - it comes in lavender.
Of course, now that I'm almost 20,075 days old and nearly older than
dirt, it's all funny again. {hint, hint - I wear a large}

Hercules Knot Jewelry
As anyone who reads this blog knows, I'm really not big on diamond jewelry. Not because it isn't absolutely gorgeous, but because the price of diamonds is - to my mind - way out there. If I could put a down payment on a house or buy a chunk of compressed carbon - there's really not going to be much difficulty choosing.
And then there are rings or necklaces or bracelets that make you stop and think for a minute. This time, because they are beautiful and - this is the biggie - they aren't priced higher than a new car.
Everlon has a line of jewelry, based on the Hercules knot, that is just incredible. Okay, I don't love all of it - too much bling is too much bling. But this ring, for example is clean, simple, and something I would have no trouble wearing.
So, perhaps, I'm changing my attitude a bit. Or, perhaps, Everlon just designs beautiful jewelry.
Buying Diamonds Online
Now, I know that you can buy diamonds online. And it's probably even possible to get a great deal - and a quality diamond. But I just don't know enough about precious gems to judge.
Well, okay, beyond Ooooh, shiny!
Frankly, I have a personal issue with buying anything to put on my finger that's going to cost something in the neighborhood of a new car. Not to mention, while diamonds are gorgeous (See Ooooh, shiny! above), I must admit I find semi-precious amethyst, topaz, aquamarine, and garnet jewelry just as beautiful.
Plus - big plus - I can own 7 or 8 really nice 5-carat amethyst rings for the price of a 1-carat, marquise-cut, H color diamond.
It occurs to me, as a bit of an afterthought, that if one was looking for a diamond or diamond ring - less than $4K/carat for the stone is probably not such a bad deal. But, until you see the stone ... less expensive may just be an object lesson in caveat emptor.
Casual Women's Jackets
Now, admittedly, I am not athletic. Walking to the powder room for a smoke is, some days, my crowning athletic achievement. I truly don't like to do anything that results in copious perspiration.
However, I do love to shop and I simply cannot resist a gorgeous jacket. (It's my curse that I live in Arizona and rarely need a coat of any kind.) Which, I hope, explains why I've fallen in love with these Jacket Joe Rocket items.

While the components are perfect for competition riding, they also make for a tremendous casual-with-jeans option for anyone. There is a removable vest liner and a ventilation system for cold and not-so-cold weather. The shell is heavy-duty nylon, meaning it's going to last more than one season.
Did I mention it comes in black or white? And it's absolutely gorgeous?
Today's Maternity Clothes
Looking back, which is something I do more often these days, I can say with all honesty that the only thing I hated about being pregnant was the clothes. Never had much morning sickness or, with the exception of seafood during the first one, any food aversions - that I can recall.
But, oh heavens, the maternity clothes. I had a black corduroy jumper that I must have lived in toward the end and - I promise you - it was not a good look. Big black belly, skinny white legs, and - need I say it - corduroy. What a picture.
Now, there are gorgeous items - like this navy and ivory skirt - that don't scream pregnant and ugly. With a navy tank and ivory jacket, or vice versa, I could see this in my wardrobe. Casual, classy, and comfortable - just what every woman craves.
And don't even get me started on this beautiful satin dress with the handkerchief hem. While designed to camouflage a blooming belly, the style would also disguise my middle-aged belly and, not-so-youthful, hips. It's just a perfect Arizona outfit - cool and floaty, it would be just right for almost every season.
Yup, maternity clothes have certainly changed.
Goodie Bags for Halloween
It may seem an odd time to be thinking of ghosts and goblins and
pumpkins; of crisp fall days and trick or treating. But when I saw
these Halloween bags, I couldn't resist sharing them.
The adorable designs are reason enough to grab several. What makes
them perfect is the personalization. Add your children's, or
grandchildren's names for a unique goodie bag they'll treasure for
years.
Thrifty Thursday: BOGO at JMark Afghans
We're having a BOGO! A really great BOGO!
Summer may be at its peak. Long days filled with sun and sand,
barbecues and picnics. But already, the days are getting shorter and
before we know it, the weather will begin to cool.
It's easy to think of warm, cuddly Afghans when there's frost in the
air and the leaves have turned brilliant colors. In the middle of
July, in our shorts and sandals, winter holidays seem a lifetime away.
But, like it or not, it will be Christmas before we know it. [Continue Reading
...]
The days and weeks leading up to that jolly holiday are the busiest
for JMark Afghans. We, easily, get as many orders in the last third
of the year as in the other eight months combined. And since we
don't make it, until you order it, those four months can get pretty
... interesting.
Which is why we'd like to offer you a little Christmas-in-July gift,
a reason to order early and order often.
From now, through August 31, we're running a Buy-One-Get-One
special. Every order, over $150, will automatically include a
matching lapghan - a minimum $40.00 value - at no extra charge. At
36" x 36", they are the perfect size to throw over your legs, wrap
around your shoulders, or bundle up the baby.
And you just can't beat FREE!
Whether you're decorating a dorm room, jazzing up the den, or
brightening up the bedroom, avoid the holiday rush and crush by
ordering now. Then, when the snow is falling and shoppers are
scurrying, you can sit back and gloat, just a little. Because you
did your shopping - in July.
Coupon Deals
I can't say I'm a Kohls shopper. Mainly due to a bad experience with a particular Michigan store. But, if I can get a good deal on a product I want, I'll shop just about anywhere.
Right now, I'm in the market for a new bathing suit. Desperately in need, as a matter of fact. If it weren't for the Kohls coupons, I honestly know that I wouldn't have looked there.
And I wouldn't have found this gorgeous floral suit - on sale.
Even so, without the free shipping coupons, I probably would have kept looking in my usual haunts.
Which really got me thinking.
I'm big on coupons for everything we get at the grocery store. Yet, I never think of looking for coupons for places like Kohls, where I can probably save a small fortune on clothes and shoes and stuff for the kitchen (one of my fave shopping categories). And, with these coupons, I could probably avoid buying what are (undoubtedly) irregulars at the outlet shops I frequent.
Some of the coupons are short-term - a couple of weeks or the current month. Which inspires me (and other savvy shoppers) to check in on a regular basis. Nothing wrong with that. If you want to save a bunch of money, you have to be willing to do a little work.
When you're looking at twenty-percent off or free shipping with no minimum, non-grocery coupons just look better and better. Of course, you still have to shop carefully and maximize the return on those coupons. And, in my case, get over previous issues with a store.
Okay, I've showed you mine - now, you show me yours. What are your favorite coupon offers? Where do you find the best deals?
MMM: Contaminated Shopping Bags
This isn't a brand new article, but I think the message bears repeating:
Reusable Shopping Bags: Green, but Unclean.
Thinking of everything that we carry in fabric / reusable shopping bags, the fact that (according to a study) 97% of us never clean the bags is a sobering fact. That bag that had the meats in it last week may have veggies in it this week.
The potential for cross-contamination is huge.
Think about it for a minute. You wouldn't cut up chicken and then, without disinfecting the board and knife, slice up your veggies. But, by not washing your totes between trips, you might well be doing exactly that. Especially if we're talking about foods that are eaten raw - carrots, celery, lettuce, tomatoes.
Researchers ran tests on reusable totes and found that 50% were positive for coliform bacteria - the group that includes E. coli. In fact, 12% of the bags tested actually had E. coli. That's a sobering thought, in these days of contamination scares.
The good news? Hand or machine washing killed over 99% of those bacteria.
So - always wash your bags between uses. We take so much care purchasing, preparing, and cooking our foods. Let's not contaminate it before we even get into the kitchen.
Thrifty Thursday: Groceries at Amazon
Due to the fact that I get to make another trip to the grocery store in the next day, or so, I'm thinking about saving money at the grocery store ... again.
And, as I absolutely hate the going and shopping and hauling, online is where I'm looking for help.
There are a couple of good reasons to give this section a look: 1.) wide variety of products and 2.) free shipping (orders over $25.00). And one, not so good: many items are only available in bulk - big bulk.
Still, there are some great deals. And if you sign up for regular delivery, i.e., 6pk of Folgers coffee every 2 months, the prices drop even further. (There's supposed to be an 'Add to Shopping List' option on the product detail pages, but I couldn't find it.)
Tea
We go through a lot of tea - a gallon a day, or thereabouts. That works out to about one 100-count box of tea bags, per month. At the grocery store or the corner store, we pay between $4.50 and $5.00 each; about $0.20/gallon†.
On Amazon, there is Lipton Tea Bags Cup Size 100-Count, 4pk for $17.96*, which works out to $0.18/gallon†. Or try the 312-Count Tea Bags option for $8.69*; about $0.11/gallon†.
Coffee
We make a pot of coffee most every day, primarily Folgers. A canister, 27.8 - 29.2 oz, lasts us about 30 days. The last one we bought was $9.88 {ouch} - or ~$0.33/pot†.
On Amazon, there is Folgers Brazilian Blend Ground Coffee 27.8-Ounce Canisters, 2pk for $17.13*, ~$0.29/pot†; and Half Caffeinated Ground Coffee 29.2-Ounce Canisters, 3pk for $25.12*, ~$0.28/pot†; and Classic Roast Ground Coffee 11.3-Ounce Refill Packs, 6pk for $21.65* ~$0.24/pot†.
Miscellaneous Groceries
Not everything we buy (naturally) is available through Amazon's Free Super Saver Shipping. So, I wouldn't order them here. Of the general grocery items we've been known to buy, here are a few items that are part of the free shipping program.
- Maruchan Ramen, 3oz 24ct at $8.56*, ~$0.36/each.
- Hunt's Diced Tomatoes (w/ Green Peppers, Celery & Onion), 14.5oz 12ct for $14.38*, ~$1.20/each.
- Plochman's Yellow Squeeze Mustard, 10.5oz 6ct at $8.44*, ~$1.41/each, $0.13/oz.
- Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise, 64oz 3ct at $22.51*, ~$7.50/each, $0.12/oz.
- Crisco Pure Canola Oil, 16oz 6ct at $13.70*, ~$2.28/each, $0.14/oz.
- La Moderna Spaghetti Pasta, 16oz 20ct at $14.96*, $0.75/lb.
- Frontier Onion Powder, 16oz 2ct at $11.40*, ~$0.36/oz.
- Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, 7.25oz 15ct at $19.38*, ~$1.29/each.
Admittedly, this is not easy shopping. If you're searching for items that you always buy, the deals may not be that much better and you may have to factor in the additional cost of shipping. Hunting down the items that are part of the free shipping program means that you may not be able to find your usual products or brands.
But, for the pantry fillers (bulk flour, sugar, pastas, or oils) or if you're willing to take the time to really look, there are some great deals to be found. And don't forget, you can sign up for regular deliveries of items you use all the time - shipping is always free.
* Prices are valid as of this writing.
† Price per gallon or pot depends on brewing strength; making tea or coffee stronger or weaker will increase or decrease the cost per/gallon or pot.
The Smartphones are Calling
I am not (necessarily) looking to upgrade my cell phone. Then again, I wasn't looking to upgrade when I upgraded to the one I have now. And, to be perfectly honest, these HTC Bell smartphones are whispering softly in my ear:
"Aw, come on. You know you want to."
Now, I just have to remind everyone - I don't have a smartphone. I have a phone that thinks it's pretty intelligent; that really wants to be a smartphone, when it grows up. So, some of the features on this HTC® Incredible S™, while {yawn} old hat to those with an SP, do cause me to drool ... just a little bit.
And, when you add in that (depending on the service plan) I could get it for FREE!, it occurs to me that I just might have to move to Canada.
Addiction #432: Sunglasses
Personally, I don't care if there's a name on my clothes, shoes, bags, or sunglasses. Any and all of those things can come from any manufacturer - as long as they're well-made, functional, durable, and attractive. Especially, my 'shades'.
I've always been a sucker for sunglasses. When my daughter was a baby, I had all sorts of styles and colors. (Mainly, because she liked to take them off my face, pull the earpieces wide, and ... {snap!} Mom got to buy new sunglasses.)
If they'd had these great replica sunglasses in those days, I'd have saved a fortune - and could have gotten a couple pair for my little shade-killer, while I was at it.
The purple ones grabbed my attention immediately - it's a personal addiction: anything purple. But the gold ones are absolutely gorgeous, even though I don't think they would offer much sun protection.
Then again - who cares? They're gorgeous.
Thrifty Thursday: LA’s Totally Awesome
After a bit of a hiatus, Thrifty Thursday is back.
This week, I'm a woman on a mission to save some money and de-gunk certain neglected areas of the apartment. I am hunting for good inexpensive cleaning supplies. Emphasis on good and inexpensive.
Some of the best I've used (fitting both criteria) are from LA's Totally Awesome.
'Awesome' Products
There are over 25 products on the LA's Totally Awesome website. From oven and grill cleaners, to laundry soap and fabric softener and stain treaters and bleach, to bathroom cleaners, to cleaners with orange or bleach or oxygen, to ammonia with lemon or pine -- there is a product for every job.
I haven't tried all of them, by any stretch of the imagination; but the ones I have used certainly live up to their press. And they're a good size. Each bottle is, depending on product, no smaller than 24 oz; most are 32 oz -- or larger.
One of the first items we tried was the All-Purpose Cleaner (APC), which is just that. Full strength or at various levels of dilution, we have 'undone' some of Mark's more interesting kitchen oopses - no fuss and {poof} no muss. It worked well on painted walls, stove tops, and cabinets with fake veneers.
Another extremely 'Awesome' item that does what it claims is the Window Cleaner. Being smokers, we tend to acquire smoke stains on walls, windows, mirrors, TV screens ... you get the idea. This cleaner takes on all stains and surfaces. (It isn't super wonderful on grease, or we wouldn't need the APC.)
My absolute hands-down favorite product from 'Awesome' is the Mop & Shine. It used to come in a spray bottle -- spray, wipe, and done convenient. We haven't bought it since they changed the packaging and, for some reason, it's not on the LA's Totally Awesome website anymore.
That leaves a bunch that we haven't (yet) given a trial run. I'm in desperate need of anxious to try Lime-Off and/or Calcium, Lime & Rust for the bathroom, and Oxygen Cleaner for all over and as a laundry boost.
Then, there's the Cleaner w/ Bleach for nearly every hard surface and Carpet Cleaner for those pesky little spots (and furniture stains) that don't warrant dragging out the full-size carpet cleaning machine. (Yup, we own one.)
Awesome Benefits
Just a quick line (or two) about the safety of these products:
- No acid
- No ammonia (except ammonia products)
- No bleach (except cleaners w/ bleach)
- Non-flammable
- Safe for septic tanks
- Contains no phosphorous
And they are -- Made in the USA!
Awesome Stores
We used to buy all of our 'Awesome' cleaners at the local dollar store for ... wait for it ... $1.00/bottle. Sadly, they are having a tough time and don't seem to carry most of our favorite goodies. So my mission, should I choose to accept it, is to find a new source.
There are a number of stores listed on the LA's Totally Awesome website. It's difficult to confirm exactly which stores carry which products. The best I could do was:
- Dollar Tree carries (on their website) every single solitary LA's Totally Awesome product - including my beloved Mop & Shine. The price is the same - $1.00/bottle; but they only sell in case lots online. They will ship to a local store, for free; but charge shipping to get it to your door.
- 4sgm.com is a wholesaler that offers by-the-case sales only. They seem to carry virtually all the 'Awesome' products at a lower per-unit cost than Dollar Tree -- with one huge caveat: Minimum order is $250.00. Which would work if one could get several people/families together and combine orders.
- 99¢ Only is supposed to carry LA's Totally Awesome products, but the only online sales are through their 'Club 99' program. Without signing up and logging in, it's impossible to tell what exactly they offer.
- Family Dollar and Dollar General are also listed as retailers. As best I could tell, neither offers online sales and, without visiting a store, there is no way to know exactly which products are available.
- The same holds true for the many little mom-and-pop dollar and discount stores around the country. Not part of a chain, it takes actually going through the cleaning products at the shop to know if and where you can find 'Awesome' cleaners.
I hope I've given you some help with those much-hated, but unavoidable, household jobs. Heaven knows, now that I've found my little cleaning treasures again, I'm going to be stocking up.

Open Letter to My Grocery Store
Today was grocery day - the most hated day of my month.
Grocery Store
This adventure involves two cab rides, minimum one hour scouring shelves and bins for what we need - calculating what we can afford as we go, carting everything up the stairs, and two hours repackaging and putting it all away.
By this time of day, I'm usually dead tired and cranky. Today, I'm crankier than usual. Thanks to my grocery store.
And prompting this open letter to Kroger/Fry's:

To My Grocery Store:
We purchase your store-brand products because they are less expensive and perform virtually as well as some of the name-brands. It should come as no surprise that we expect those products to continue to be a good value.
Today, my dear store, you disappointed me.
I picked up a box of quart-size freezer bags - the same ones I've been buying for months - only to find that there were now 5 fewer bags in the box. What was $0.0796/per bag is now $0.0995/per bag. Or the equivalent of a 25% increase in price.
In other words, I now have to buy 5 boxes of bags to accomplish what I did with 4 boxes. What I used to get done for $8.00, will now take $10.00 and more trips to the store. This is just bad news, no matter which way you look at it.
Oh, in your defense, dear store, you did add a white field to these fewer bags; a place, theoretically, where I can mark what I bagged and when. Sadly, I was already doing that - with a permanent pen - on the bags that didn't cost me quite so much. So, in all honesty, I'd rather have the missing - plain - freezer bags.
They did the job. At a price that was a decent value. It wasn't broken; you shouldn't have fixed it.

eBooks or 'Real' Books
I love to read – anything and everything. Well, except Jonathan Kellerman at 3:00am; his bad guys are scary cuckoo. I can't imagine not having books at my fingertips. The feel of them, the smell of them; flipping from page to page, absorbed in people, places, and events.
How do you get the same sensation, the same joy from changing screens? And, as I'm not (currently) planning to buy an ereader, how do you curl up in bed with a laptop? Or drag it from room to room, when you just can't tear yourself away from the action on the page?
No, my preference will always (ooh, shouldn't say 'always') be a book in my hands. And yet … curiosity is such that I'll, undoubtedly, download software and creep, grudgingly, into the 21st century. Maybe I'd even manage to save a tree or two along the way.
In the meantime, can someone please explain to me why ebooks are more expensive than their print equivalents? Or even the same price? There are no physical materials, printing costs, packaging and shipping costs involved in an ebook.
It just doesn't make any sense to me at all.
First Anniversary Gifts
Anniversaries can be tricky things. What do you do? What do you get?
After a few years, it gets easier; you learn each others tastes and preferences. But the first anniversary? A potential timebomb.
We're heading toward our tenth, so we're way past the panic associated with 1st anniversary gifts. Thank heaven. Still, I love looking at gift ideas; modern and traditional. Some wouldn't even be limited to a once-a-year occasion.

Since the first year is paper (okay, or clocks), I didn't really think there were too many options out there. But one idea really caught my eye: a Personalized New York Times Book.
Frankly, I've always wanted something like this - a collection of headlines and stories from, say, the day you were born, or your wedding day, or the day(s) your child(ren) were born. Just always seemed really fun. A great way to look back, see what was happening in the world on a special day.
But then, as a kitchen-goodie junkie, the Newlywed Cooking Kit is pretty cute. With those embroidered spoons and names, not to mention the cookbook, it would be great. Even for a second or third anniversary.
And, if you've ever worn your favorite red sauce, you know that you just can't have too many aprons.
CoverGirl NatureLuxe Coupon Giveaway
I was truly excited about this, our first giveaway; then I took a good look at what I received from CoverGirl.
What I thought were coupons for a free NatureLuxe Foundation were simply $2.00 off the purchase price. So sad.
But, hey; we can work with this. Right?!
Instead of follows on Twitter, and NetworkedBlogs, likes on Facebook or retweets of this giveaway, we'll just make it really, really quick and simple:
The first five (5) comments - after 9:00am (PDT) on May 5th - will get a coupon.
That's it. All you have to do is leave a comment - with your email address, please - to get a $2.00 off coupon for this really fabulous foundation. (While I'm not happy with CoverGirl's ... ahem ... generosity, the foundation is wonderful.)
Don't include any identifiable information in your comments! I'll send an email for what I need, once we get those five comments.
And see if we can't put together something a lot more ... worth winning ... for next month.
Thrifty Thursday: Meat and Produce Price Increases
Wikimedia Commons
This is, to my mind, one of those rock-and-a-hard-place situations.
Wikimedia Commons
The entire country is raging about fast food and obesity. Articles all over the Internet are touting eating healthy; cooking at home is the answer to Happy Meals and Whoppers, and expensive restaurant dining or carry-out.
Apparently, that last part isn't quite true anymore.
There was a brief story on the local news recently, explaining that we can expect an 8% increase in the cost of meats and produce over the coming weeks. So our effort to do the right thing, to improve the content of our diets, is being not-so-subtly undermined.
In March, the Alabama Farmer's Federation announced a 3.8 percent increase in the cost of groceries in their state, prompting an article: 5 Ways to Save on Produce & Meats, in The Birmingham News. With another increase on the way, the advice is welcome.
In a nutshell, 1.) Buy produce in season, from local sources; 2.) Cut, slice, and chop meats and veggies yourself; 3.) Non-organic is cheaper, but remember to wash well; 4.) Buy meats on sale and in bulk; 5.) Save money with coupons and by shopping at warehouse stores.
Even when prices aren't soaring out of reach, these are good shopping habits.
Purex Insiders
We are excited to announce that JMark Afghans has been approved as a member in Purex Insiders.
What does that mean for us? Well, we get to try product samples as Purex® gets ready to market them. See what's new, before it hits store shelves, and influence future laundry products.
More importantly, what does it mean for you?
Among other benefits, it means that our faithful readers will know first what Purex® is developing, where and when it goes on sale, and - most importantly - whether the products perform as promised.
Oh, and for those who follow us regularly - we're going to be offering chances to win free stuff.
As a new member of Purex Insiders, we're waiting with bated breath to see what goodies we'll receive first.
There are a couple of new products that are pretty intriguing: Purex® Complete with Zout® (detergent and pre-treater) and Purex® Complete Crystals™ Softener (softener added to the wash cycle). With all of the afghans we wash, the Crystals are something we can really use.
We already love Purex® Free & Clear, but generally don't mess with pre-treaters; it's an extra step that seems to be more work than help. And, face it, remembering to catch the rinse cycle for the fabric softener makes laundry day even more of a chore. I can't wait to see how these new products work and - with any luck - simplify an unavoidable job.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I am a Purex Insider. While I do receive complimentary sample products from the Purex® brand, my opinions are my own.
Boots!
Honestly? I can't say I know much about what are called equestrian boots. Where I come from, people wore boots - period. Or, if you prefer, cowboy or western boots.
Boots designed, and preferred, for English riding are as foreign to me as dressage is to a barrel racer.
Years ago, my first husband bought me a beautiful pair of cowboy boots. Light-colored leather with squared toes and stacked heels, they hit me about mid-calf. I loved them from the moment I saw them on the shelf.
If memory serves, I wore them twice. Nothing against the boots; I have long skinny feet with incredibly high arches and finding shoes that don't hurt my feet is a miracle. And usually expensive.
I have to admit, though: the more I look at these black boots (gotta love black!), the more comfortable they look. Maybe I'll just have to try a pair.
See why I have dozens of shoes and constantly wear the same 2 pair?
Thrifty Thursday: Scrubbing Together Some Great Clothes
I'd say it was a female thing, but I know Mark likes new clothes, too. For me, I run around in tank tops and pajama pants; until I have to run to the store. Then, I need something a little less ... sleep-wear.
Which is part of the reason I was looking at discount scrubs today. Stay with me here - there are some great choices, that don't make you think tetanus shot and sponge bath. Okay, maybe sponge bath was the wrong image to conjure.
When you think about it, there are several reasons why scrubs work as casual attire.
First, they're lightweight. In Arizona, that's a must. We've already had weather in the 90s and it's heading back that way with a vengeance. Summer everywhere calls for clothing that breathes, but doesn't wilt. Hence - scrubs. (When was the last time you saw a wrinkled, frumpy-looking nurse?)
Second, styles have changed. Scrubs come in a myriad of shapes, styles, colors, and patterns. The nurses on Mark's floor at the VA had some great outfits that started me thinking about this years ago. Just look at the black hearts jacket. This is not the olden days - white uniform, starched cap, and {shudder} those shoes.
Last, but perhaps most important, is the laundry-factor. Scrubs are designed to wash up often and well. Think about it - or maybe not - nurses and doctors come in contact with some, um, interesting substances on any given day. The clothes they wear must be easy to get clean. We've got some pjs from the VA that still shed any and all stains, even after 7 years.
So, see? Not such an odd idea, after all.
Everything, Plus the Kitchen Sink
It would be lovely to have a dishwasher - one that didn't have two arms, two legs, and a bad attitude about washing dishes. At the very least, a decent sink would help. Sadly, kitchen sinks top the list of things we can't replace.
Not to mention, it would be a bit of a pain to take with us on moving day.
That doesn't, however, keep me from window shopping and dreaming about a better option. Like this double sink - deeper and more efficient than the sad little (and I do mean little) option we're dealing with now.
Our current (single) sink is just about the same depth as my dishpan and not quite twice the width. When I wash dishes, the plates are bigger than the rinsing space. And I can't wash any of our larger skillets or Dutch ovens without emptying everything out and taking them one at a time.
Yup, no doubt about it. We need a dishwasher bigger sink.
Sustainable Scents
I got an email earlier from care2.com - a Daily Deal, which I pretty much planned to ignore. Not because I don't like saving money or don't like Care2. But because I only wear one scent and wasn't looking to change.
Naturally, curiosity won out in the end. I just had to see what organic perfume was all about.
Not only are their scents made from certified-organic ingredients with no petrochemicals or synthetic components, you can plant the packaging. That's right - the boxes are embedded with flower seeds and can be planted. Now that, my friends, is recycling at its very finest.
Maybe a new perfume wouldn't be such a bad idea, after all.
Thrifty Thursday: Food Storage
The cost of food is shocking. And will undoubtedly get worse, before it gets better. That means shopping smarter and taking a serious look at food storage.
Ideally, we'd walk to local shops and get what we need for today. No worry about how long food lasts in the fridge, because it's gone before it can go bad. Ah, a perfect world.
Since I don't live in that world, I have to make what I buy last longer.
I hate using plastic bags, but they are (so far) the best option I've found for keeping produce usable longer. The key is getting it put away, properly, as quickly as possible. It's never going to be any fresher than the day you bring it home.
We wash, cut up, and bag most of what we buy immediately.
Photo: Wikimedia/Francinegirvan
Celery and Green Pepper: Clean and cut into strips about the width of a quart-size freezer bag. We divide into two or three bags. (If one goes, it doesn't take out the whole batch.) Squeeze the air out and they'll last up to a month in the veggie bin.
Carrots: Scrub (not peel) them well and trim ends. Cut into usable sizes: strips for snacking, larger pieces for cooking. Bag by size and, again, get all of the air out.
Fresh Greens, e.g., Spinach, Lettuce: Wash well and shake off excess water; core head lettuce. Bag carefully; don't bruise. Leaf lettuce, collard greens, kale, etc. need a damp paper towel in the bag. (We bag head lettuce in halves or thirds; no paper towel.)
Fresh Herbs, Green Onions: Common wisdom says store these in water. I wash them well, remove iffy leaves and fresh-cut the herb stems. (Don't trim root-end of onions.) A sturdy mug is less likely to fall over in the fridge.
Onions and Potatoes: The exceptions to the rules. These veggies need air or they rot. My absolute personal favorite storage method is wire mesh, three-tiered hanging baskets. Just hang somewhere that's not too warm, with good airflow. Should work just as well for turnips, rutabagas, parsnips and other root veggies.
Fruits are, naturally, totally different. If you cut them up before storing, they tend to turn brown or dry out. For almost all of our fruits, I like (again) those mesh hanging baskets. Or paper bags, in the veggie bin. Keep apples away from everything else; they give off gases as they ripen which accelerate ripening (and rot) in most other produce.
So, what did I miss? Do you buy, and successfully store, other goodies from the produce aisle? Please share your tips and tricks in the comments.
We all need to make our food dollars go as far as we can. Not throwing away half of what we buy is a darned good place to start.
Thrifty Thursday: Electronic Coupons
I love saving money on food. I hate clipping coupons.
The problem, besides forgetting to bring them to the store, is digging through pages of junk to get to the few items I buy. There are a couple of ways around that. Thank heaven.
One is digital coupons that I can load right on my grocery club card. The other involves those tremendous sites that let me choose which coupons I want to print.
Digital Coupons
The main source of digital grocery coupons are the stores themselves. All you need is a store discount / saver / club card, whatever they call it where you shop. Then, go online to the store website, choose your coupons, and upload to your card. (If the shopping part was only that easy.)
Grocery Stores
I've listed these two stores, because they're in our area and I know they offer online ecoupons. Check your store for similar deals.
Safeway.com has a pretty extensive collection of coupons. Sort them by your purchase history (items you've bought before), best value, new offers, and deals about to expire. They're not region-specific, so you should be able to use them anywhere in the country.
Kroger / Fry's is another great source. The last time I checked, there were over 100 coupons available for everything from bread and soup to laundry soap and pet food. Again, you can sort by newest, expiration, popularity, or value.
Online Services
P&G eSaver is one of my personal favorites. They offer coupons for a huge number of Proctor & Gamble products and - love this so much - will upload them to your store shopper card. Just register your card and off you go - save away.
Shortcuts.com is a free service from AOL that has several different options. You can register a shopper card from a large selection of participating stores and upload your choice of coupons. They also offer printable coupons, cash-back savings, and online coupon codes.
Cellfire.com is another online service that lets you upload coupons to your store card. But, unlike other services, you can also get non-grocery coupons sent to your mobile phone. You'll never leave home without savings at your fingertips again.
Printable Coupons
Most sites offering printable coupons require that you download their special printer software. It's important, because the coupons' bar codes won't scan if not printed properly.
Grocery Stores
Albertson's, which may be a different online company in your area, only provides printable coupons. (At least, I couldn't find any electronic ones.) The offers seem to vary, somewhat, by store and region.
Whole Foods Market is located across the US, as well as British Columbia, Ontario, and the UK. The products look to be exclusive to the store, but there are a lot of available coupons.
Online Services
CouponBug and Coupons.com seem to offer the same (exact) printable coupons. There are also savings card options, as well as coupon codes for online shopping. (The majority of their deals seem to be in the printables, but they do work with several different shopper cards.)
Kingdom First Mom has some great coupon resources. Including a searchable database with information on - literally - thousands of coupons, deals, and offers. It took me a little time to figure out the lingo (for which KFM offers a glossary).
This is, by no means, a complete list of options. But, it should get you started saving on that weekly grocery bill.
Please feel free to share your favorite sites, pages, and online deals.

Coppery Glass Tiles
Apparently, everything I do and find these days is going to be related to my dream bathroom. Case in point? Today, I found the most incredible glass mosaic tiles I have ever seen.
It didn't take much for me to imagine them covering the walls and base around the soaking tub. Of course, I'll have to rethink my dark magenta walls. But, I think I could live, very nicely, with something that falls between the dark and mid-range colors of these tiles.
In fact, if memory serves, it was just a few weeks ago that I fell madly in love with a copper sink that would be amazing with these colors. That sink was designed for the kitchen, so it might be a little large. Hmmm? I wonder.
Do you suppose there's a smaller version that would work, in duplicate, for the bathroom? How perfect would that be? Coppery glass tiles and twin copper sinks?
Oh, yeah. I think I'm definitely in love.
A Chocoholic in Need of a Fix
It occurred to me, as I was drooling all over my computer screen, that
surfing sites with gift baskets, brownies, and flavored popcorn is a
really bad idea when there aren't any sweets in the house.
Ultimate Brownie Bow Box
It all started with the brownies. That many colors, flavors, and
tempting combinations just can't be ignored. I mean seriously - who
could resist anything that combines toffee crunch and brownie in the
same recipe?
Of course, oatmeal and butterscotch is a combination that just begs
tasting, too.
Includes buttercream frosted hot fudge, classic vanilla fudge, toffee
crunch, classic fudge, blondie, and oatmeal scotchie brownies.

One of our favorite treats is popcorn, with a side of fudge.

crunch and rich, decadent chocolate go together like dill pickles

And do not intend to look for it.
A Cozy Way to Beat the Cold
Quick Afghan 001
With the weather we're having this week, all I know is I'm certainly happy to have a collection of afghans to crawl under. It has been - for Arizona - darned cold. Highs in the low 50s send us running for covers. Lots of them!
This Quick Afghan, one of my newest designs, now has the place of honor on my side of the bed. Our comforter is definitely an Arizona design - stops cold air about as well as cheesecloth. Even in the summer, I can't sleep without my afghan.
I just love the wonderful weight of it. When I was a kid, Mom always had lots and lots of covers piled thick on the bed. Which may be why wrapping up in a soft, cozy afghan makes me feel safe and protected.

Thrifty Thursday: Shopping Green
Everyone who knows me can swear that I hate department stores and
malls. Especially around the holidays when the insanity is ramped up
to a level that boggles the mind and strikes terror into the hearts of
the average human being.
However, I love online shopping. I can take my time, browse wherever
and whenever the mood strikes, and no one is going to rush me, bug me,
or tear an item out of my hands. Win-win and, now, WIN. [Continue Reading
...]
According to an article I was reading today, online shopping is green
shopping. How's that for tremendous news? Of course, you
probably already knew that; I certainly did.
Shopping at your local mall or favorite store means that a shopper,
and dozens like him/her, are increasing energy consumption and
pumping more emissions (that we really don't need) into the air. By
staying home, comfy and cozy in that favorite chair, and ordering
what we need online, we aren't putting cars on the roads and crap
into the atmosphere.
Of course, you can't quite get everything online. But for every trip
that you don't make, you're doing the planet a favor.
Curious About the Cost of Cigars vs. Cigarettes
Photo: Wikimedia/Cyberjunkie
Frankly, smoking is becoming an extremely expensive bad habit. I don't
know about where you live, but here in Arizona all of our sins are
pretty heavily taxed. Which got me started thinking; about smoking, in
general and cigars, in particular.
With cigarettes at about $5.50 a pack, for the absolute cheapest
available within walking distance, how do people afford those great
cigars that I see them smoking? Now, granted, they probably don't
smoke 10 cigars a day (my current smoking count), so I suppose that
explains part of it. But even at 2 or 3 a day, depending on brand,
that's nearly as much as I pay for a pack of cigarettes.
Are there any cigar smokers out there? How many do you smoke in a day;
a week? And, if you don't mind, just how expensive is it?
I'm not trying to be nosy, too much; mostly just curious how the cost
compares. Let me know.
Soak My Troubles Away
I recently did a post about amazing bathroom fixtures that looked like
furniture. A personal weakness, as I'm sure I mentioned. At the time,
I was mentally redecorating a bathroom and was determined, in keeping
with the rest of the room, that there be a claw-foot tub.
Well, I may have been a tad premature in that determination. Today, I
stumbled across several 6-foot-long soaking
tubs. My bathroom schemes may never be the same.
For several hours, I just sat back and imagined sliding down in the
tub and soaking away every ache and pain in my poor 6-foot-long body.
I don't think I've been able to just sink down to my neck - without
sticking my legs up the wall - since I was about 10 years old.
It's definitely something I could learn to love.
I Love Shopping for Lighting
While I'm not, necessarily, ready to buy new living room lighting, I am always ready to shop - especially when it comes to
pendant lighting. There are so many styles that I can spend hours and hours just oohing and aahing over finishes, plating, and - best of all - amazing glass and colored canopies.
(Learned today that lamps have shades; pendant lights have canopies. Pretty cool, huh?)
I just can't decide if I like the frosted or ribbed glass better than, for example, the beautiful green. Or a gorgeous dark blue.
And then there's this really interesting marble look and a powdered copper color that just makes me sigh. Can't say that I really like the red and orange, just not my color faves. However, the satin brass is pretty darn ... pretty.
Oh, yes. I'm going to be at this for a long, long while.
Exit (and Restroom) Signs
Photo: Wikimedia Commons/BrokenSphere
Honestly, it's not something I ever really considered - types of exit signs. They're something that's simply there - or, at least, you hope they are if you need to get out of a building or off the freeway. (I got a kick out of this picture, from the South San Francisco BART station.)
Then I started thinking - what if I were blind? Granted, that would eliminate the need for freeway exit signs; but what about getting out of a building? Especially a building that I didn't know well.
It's actually rather interesting, the number of braille signs that are available. More interesting, however, is the history of those signs; especially in the state of California. (Do a search for California Restroom Signs.)
Bureaucracy at its ... best?
Thrifty Thursday: Impulse Spending and Gotta-Haves
As I mentioned last week, I stumbled across a great blog recently: The
Simple Dollar. What I found so interesting was the perspective -
how, frequently, what we buy is tied to how we feel.
In a great mood? Celebrate by buying something. Having a bad day/week?
Pick yourself up with a quick trip to your favorite store.
We can all look back (or look in the closet) and see ourselves in
those statements. [Continue Reading
...]
Impulse or emotional spending is one of the biggest hits to our
budgets and credit cards. And, when it's all said and done, we
rarely feel better because we're now cash-poorer or deeper in debt.
In fact, shopping-as-therapy is almost guaranteed to make us feel
worse.
That's why I gave it up, years ago. I had closets and drawers full
of stuff I never (or rarely) used and my credit cards were groaning
under the weight of all those charges. Believe me, the impulse is
still there (watches, shoes, and handbags call to me); I've just
learned to turn a deaf ear and blind eye.
The latest The Simple Dollar column, "The
Lifestyle You Want," looks at some basic emotional and financial
truths. Starting with "If you're unhappy with your life, buying
stuff won't change that." Truthfully, how much do we really need -
not want, not desire - but need to be happy?
My Gotta-Have List
-
A roof over my head that doesn't leak ~ I am not likely to enjoy
living in my vehicle or taking up permanent residence in a tent in
the wilderness.
-
Running water and a working toilet ~ For pretty much the same
reasons as above, these are things I just gotta have. No
negotiating.
-
Electricity and/or Gas ~ Being averse to living in a tent or
vehicle, I am also averse to having no lights or heat (or cool). I
know it's odd, but that's just the way I am.
-
Food, on a fairly regular basis ~ It doesn't have to be gourmet;
it just needs to land (by my own hand or Mark's) on a plate near
my face every day, or so.
-
Clothes ~ Again, like the food, it doesn't have to be fancy.
Heaven knows, I don't go anywhere fancy. But I do like to cover up
the ugly parts, even if I'm just sitting around playing computer
games.
-
Select Electronics ~ Okay, I'm not as basic as I'd like to think.
I need a TV and a computer and a basic cell phone - I just do.
Right or wrong.
-
Books ~ I would probably be willing to swap the TV for an
unlimited supply of reading material. In fact, I'm pretty sure
that would be more than a fair trade.
Off the top of my head, I can't honestly think of anything else
that's a deal-breaker. A working vehicle would be really great.
However, since ours died a couple of years ago, I know that it's
possible to get around without one. It's not convenient or always
easy, but it can be done.
Your Gotta-Have List
What about you? What would be on your list of gotta-haves? Better
yet - what can you, absolutely, give up or do without?
MMM: Prenatal Vitamins
Photo: Wikimedia/Canwest News Service
I'm not, in case anyone missed the rants and raves, exactly a fan of magic-in-a-bottle supplements. Mostly they're a waste of time and money; occasionally they're toxic. But, prenatal vitamins aren't hype and they shouldn't be dangerous.
When my daughter got pregnant, I started thinking about things like prenatal vitamins. The sheer number of "Getcher prenatal vitamins here!" sites shocked and scared me. As did/does the grab-bag of ingredients.
Just how much of what is right?
Even the so-called (Internet) experts don't always agree on the nuts-and-bolts of supplements for pregnant women. Since we're messing with (pardon the language) two lives here, my gut tells me to go with the obstetrician. S/He can (and should) look at medical history, current blood work, and determine the mother-to-be's unique requirements.
Recommended Ingredients
According to a 2009 article in WebMD, the basic prenatal vitamin should include:
- 400 mcg of folic acid
- 400 IU of vitamin D (Note: look for D3; vitamin D2 can be toxic.)
- 200 to 300 mg of calcium
- 70 mg of vitamin C
- 3 mg of thiamine
- 2 mg of riboflavin
- 20 mg of niacine
- 6 mcg of vitamin B12
- 10 mg of vitamin E
- 15 mg of zinc
- 17 mg of iron
This is a short list, considering that it doesn't address vitamin A, omega-3s, and iodine. It also doesn't mention the myriad of additional ... stuff ... that the Internet-available prenatal vitamins like to throw in to the mix, e.g., probiotics, ginger root, or inositol. In and of themselves, these add-ins are probably benign; but pregnancy seems like an iffy time to test that theory.
Toxic Ingredients
Not to mention, lead levels. Yup, that's right - lead. In 2008 the FDA tested 324 women's and children's vitamins (purchased over the Internet) and only found four (4) with zero lead. For pregnant and lactating women, one brand with a three-step regimen offered the highest and lowest lead levels - from no detected lead to a whopping 8.97µg Pb/day estimated exposure.
Hopefully, in the 29 months since they posted the results, some of the manufacturers have corrected this problem. Or pulled their products. (The 3-step regimen is still out there, and carried by drugstore.com; I'm hoping they've modified their supplement.)
Common Sense
It can't be overstated that pregnancy is the wrong time to mess with the chemical balance of your body. Nature's already doing that for you.
Eating well is the best way to get your vitamins. Unfortunately, morning (and afternoon and evening) sickness, loss of appetite, inability to tolerate certain foods, and difficulty affording a diet full of fruits, veggies, and healthy proteins often get in the way.
A multiple vitamin, designed for this time in your life, may be just what the doctor ordered. But - please - let the doctor help you choose. Your body and your baby will thank you.
Thrifty Thursday: Tips for Taking Control of Your Finances
It's easy to find a site with financial hints and tips. Finding one
with reliable hints and tips is a bit more difficult. Partly because
our lives are all so different - what works for one, might not work
for another.
That's why I was a little skeptical about the
eBook from "The Simple Dollar." (I tend to have iffy feelings
about eBooks, in general.) But I was pleasantly surprised by the
contents.
This free, downloadable book offers five (5) simple ideas for
regaining and keeping control of your money - and your life.
Idea #1: Spend Less Than You Earn!
"In the end, this is the fundamental rule of personal finance."
It seems so obvious, doesn't it? No matter how much you make each
year, that's all you have to spend. If I only have $500.00 in my
pocket, I can't buy a $700.00 leather jacket - not without adding to
my debt or depleting my savings account. Both bad ideas.
Idea #2: Earn More!
"There are some common things that anyone can do, regardless of
their financial state, to earn more money."
Some of these seem so simple, you'll wonder why you didn't think of
them. They start with the current workplace: show up alert and ready
to work, do your job well, keep a positive attitude, and avoid toxic
people. From there, the tips look at getting additional education,
finding your passion, and starting a side business.
Idea #3: Live Frugal!
Living frugally doesn't mean living poorly.
These 100 tips (also found here)
look at getting the most out of your money - break unhealthy
spending habits; make, don't buy, gifts; learn to stop impulse
shopping; save on food by buying and cooking in bulk - to name just
a few. Maybe all 100 won't speak to you, but I'll bet many of them
will.
Idea #4: Manage Your Money!
Use every spare dime to build a stable future.
There are a lot of ideas here, most of which we know; even if we
don't remember to practice them. From the obvious - Pay off those
credit cards and pay down that debt, to the ones we forget - Max out
that retirement account and start investing in the future.
Idea #5: Control Your Own Destiny!
I love this one. "It's not about being rich; it's about freedom."
Isn't that, deep down, what we're all looking for - freedom? The
freedom to do what we want, when we want. No debt hanging over our
heads; no supervisors micro-managing our every minute.
I know that these ideas speak to me. And I'll definitely be doing a
lot of thinking - and rethinking - thanks to the jumpstart this
eBook has given me. How about you?
My Fantasy Bathroom
Maybe it's because we have slap-together, cheapest-materials-on-earth cabinets. Or maybe it's simply because they are absolutely gorgeous. But I have always had a serious soft spot for a bath vanity that looks like quality furniture.
It's so easy to imagine having this bathroom. Just out of site would be an amazing old clawfoot tub, painted a glossy magenta that would almost match the walls. I suppose I could allow a shower in one corner, if it were just right.
I'm thinking etched glass doors, mostly opaque, and creamy marble tiles with rose-colored veining would work perfectly. The shower heads and fixtures would have to have an antique look, similar to the faucet on the sink. Then it wouldn't, in any way, detract from the overall ambiance.
Oh, yes! I could live with this bathroom. Not a problem.
Great Jewelry From Charm & Chain
One of our newest shopping partners, Charm & Chain, reminds me why I love bracelets. Just look at this great cuff! Denim and suede ribbon, combined with rhinestones and gold chains. So much fun!
Makes me picture a complete outfit: my favorite jeans; a light, snowy white cotton sweater; suede half-boots; and a rhinestone-studded vest - with this cuff perched charmingly on my wrist. Oh, and a great hobo bag. And a chunky gold belt.
Hmmm, now that I think about it, I remember seeing some great denim-blue wedgies with gold accents on a previous window-shopping trip that would be absolutely perfect.
And it all started with a great cuff bracelet. Just never know where inspiration will strike.
Rethinking Casual Shoes
Ever since my sandals died - it was an ugly death, they pretty much
disintegrated - I have been on a desperate hunt for replacements. Last
Christmas, thanks to a surprise bonus, I ordered a really cute pair of
casual slip-ons. I wore them twice.
My heels bled for days, each time. The shoes currently live under my
bed, as though - given sufficient time - they'll magically soften up
and stop torturing my feet. Yes, I know - delusional thinking.
However, I have had another idea: wrestling
shoes.
I know it seems silly, but bear with me. These shoes are made of
breathable materials that support the feet. They're lightweight and
comfortable, with a non-skid sole that would work just fine outside.
The other thing I like? They aren't big, fat athletic shoes. I have
long narrow feet that look huge in the average casual shoe. It's
just not attractive.
Frankly, there are a lot more styles than I expected. And the prices
seem to be pretty reasonable. The more I think about it, the more I
like the idea.
Swarovski Crystal Butterfly
Larger than actual size (18mm/0.70in)
My daughter makes jewelry; she also paints. I don't know where she got
all this talent. But I'm pretty certain she would just love this Swarovski
butterfly.
It would be just lovely, hanging singly from a delicate chain.
However, I was also thinking that, surrounded by small crystal beads,
the look would be just incredible. Or perhaps an even more dramatic
combination.
What about small crystal beads and, slightly larger, crystal hearts
(or maybe stars) along the chain? At the center, hangs this beautiful
butterfly. It comes in so many colors - from silver or copper, to
aquamarine or jet - that the design possibilities are endless.
Maybe I'll have to try my hand at jewelry design. Not only are these
beads inspiring, the prices are almost too great to resist.
Still Hunting For a Printer
The hunt continues for our new printer. I've been looking at Brother printers most recently. And I have to admit to a little disappointment.
There were a couple, almost, in our price range. But they were only black & white printers. (The color versions were definitely more than our budget could bear.) Frankly, that just wouldn't work for me.
Most of my printing - grocery lists, notwithstanding - is color business cards and flyers. Not to mention, I need to print some pictures of my granddaughter. While she is adorable no matter what, those big blue eyes just wouldn't be the same in black and white.
Guess I'll just have to keep looking.
Hunting for the Perfect Office Chair
Well, we took care of the desk - took it apart, cut it down, and put it back together. Although, it cost us some shelf space, our living room looks almost big. It's just wonderful.
Sadly, we can now see just how bad the desk chair looks. And, trust me, it looks bad. It wasn't top of the line to start with, so being abused by the boys did not help.
I've taken to browsing the modern office furniture websites, looking for a replacement. Frankly, it's harder than it seems; finding an adjustable, comfortable, and (ahem) affordable chair. You simply can't sit in an online image.
Mark is a tad ... picky. It certainly doesn't help that, with the diabetes, he has a lot of trouble with swelling and pain in his legs. The wrong chair just adds to his misery.
So, no matter how great it looks, there is a risk that, once it arrives, it'll be all wrong. And that is what makes it really, really tough. But, hey, I live to shop.
I can do this!
Casual, but Classic Ensemble
It appears that I'm in the mood for a new outfit. Preferably one that suits my lifestyle (extremely casual) and age (not a teenager). This beaded cardigan, knit top, and jeans that sit where they should is just perfect.
Even though I love some of the more youthful styles, I understand that women's apparel is going to be much more comfortable for me. Make me feel beautiful and take me anywhere I want to go.
Once in a while, you see someone with wardrobe courage or, if you prefer, daring. Somehow they manage to pull together an incredible look from pieces that, taken singly, don't seem to work. I love their style; occasionally, even envy it.
For me, with outfits like this one - I don't need to worry. It will always look great.
Apple Bottoms
I must admit that I had never heard of Apple Bottoms before today. The designs, by Nelly, are definitely young and fun - too young for me. When I see form-fitting short skirts and dresses, I just have to sigh.
However, being a never-say-die shopper, it's not too hard to find something to love.
The boots and bags are enticing. Unlike paint-on skinny jeans, there are several pair of wedges (and studded boots) that would be so much fun to wear. Even at my age, I don't think they'd be too outrageous.
Maybe I'd better start with these adorable black boots and work my way up to studs, buckles, and zippers.
iPhones and Me
I had never seen an iPhone, until I went to Colorado for my kids' weddings in 2008. My first reaction was a heartfelt, "I want one of those!" The things they could do seemed out of this world.
Which is probably why I still don't have an iPhone. It was just a tad overwhelming to me. Heck, Mark's latest and greatest makes me a little dizzy, just watching him zip between screens - without actually touching any screens.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not afraid of technology. I can work my way around a desktop or laptop quite nicely, thank you. But, just how much zing and zoom do I really need (want) in a cell phone?
Mark and my kids swear by their phones. And, to be completely honest, I must admit to a little phone-envy when Mark does a search - by voice - for ... anything. It's pretty darn cool.
Maybe I'm just afraid that the phone is smarter than I am. (Don't look now! I think I've become my mother! Aaaargh!)
Oooh! Pretty Phone!
We are admitted phone junkies. Mark more than me, but you would not believe the phones we have put away for a rainy day. And, honestly, it has been our salvation on more than one occasion.
So, when I saw this HTC Desire 2.2, it was not surprising that I did more than a little oohing and aahing. You've got to admit it's a pretty cool looking phone.
Unfortunately, it's got one of those keyboards that I've never managed to master.
This one does seem, in the picture, to be bigger than the keyboard on the BlackBerry we had for about 5 minutes. I don't know what it is about those itty bitty keys, but I just cannot manage to hit the ones I want. Very frustrating for a touch-typist.
Thrifty Thursday: More 'Cyber' Deals
Cyber Monday may be over, but the deals are still out there. Thank heaven! Because we're looking (desperately) for a new printer.
It doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles. Just printing and copying is more than good enough for what we do on a regular basis. The scanning and saving to computer is great - just not necessary all the time.
The printer we had was an ink hog. For what little we printed or copied, we were constantly buying replacement cartridges. Not exactly a cost-effective option.
Over the three years that we've had it, I would guess we've paid for it at least twice - just in the cost of ink. I won't be sorry to see the last of that nightmare.
Now, I just have to find a good replacement. That we can afford. Come on sales! Help!
Crystal Door Knobs
One of the few things one can do, as a renter, (without getting in trouble) is replace door knobs, shower heads, and other hardware. Of course, it has to be put back if/when you move. But, until then, your home isn't just boring old same-old same-old.
Personally, I have a serious 'thing' for crystal door knobs, like Baldwin hardware offers. They are just so beautiful. And, for very little cash, transform any room from ordinary to memorable.
Granted, the best place for these gorgeous knobs is an old, restored house. I can only imagine how much fun it would be to be able to completely remodel and return a great home to its glory days.
Ahhh. Someday.
Sterling Silver Jewelry
I love sterling
silver jewelry. It's simple math (okay, and a little greed). I can
get many, many more sparklies (Ms. Bris) in silver than in gold.
Plus, to my mind, so many of the semi-precious stones just look better
in silver. Especially my birthstone. I have topaz earrings, mounted in
gold and, don't get me wrong, they are beautiful.
But, look at the November version of these great bangle bracelets -
the silver-tone setting doesn't detract from the color of the stones.
And don't even get me started on February.
I just love purple ... everything!
Fun T-Shirts
I love t-shirts. Since moving to Arizona and becoming a stay-at-home
caregiver, I rarely get all dressed up. (Don't miss pantyhose, at
all.) T-shirts and tank tops are my wardrobe staples.
Which probably explains why I love Zazzle. It's more than creating
designs. I can take any idea (like this angel-wings -->) and put it on
whatever style suits my needs - or my mood.
For warm weather, there are tanks and spaghetti straps and sleeveless
versions. Come fall, I can opt for long sleeves or hoodies. [Continue Reading
...]
Beyond that, there are fitted styles that are great layered under a
jacket or button-down and looser cuts that are perfect for hiding my
indulgence in pumpkin pie (and Mark's fudge). Heck, I can even create
something special for my granddaughter. They have the cutest onesies
and baby t-shirts.
The possibilities are endless ... and a tad addicting. Every great
quote seems to lend itself to another shirt -- or four or five. And
fun pictures just beg to be immortalized.
Why not zip
on over and see what we've been up to?
Thifty Thursday: Feed Me, Seymour! II
After a brief break, this week we return to the subject of saving money at the grocery store. One thing we all have to have is food - gotta eat, you know - regularly.
But, as we started exploring, it is not necessary to break the bank to keep from starving.
After addressing meat, produce, dairy, and bakery items, we are left with the middle of the store. In so many ways, this is the risky part of the shopping trip. The items you'll find here tend to be the snacks, sodas, and pre-packaged processed stuff with a longer shelf-life than Styrofoam.
Frozen
Vegetables
Frozen vegetables are less processed than canned, meaning more nutrients and fewer preservatives. Like anything else, however, you need to read the labels carefully. We found several packages with added sugar and/or sodium.
Store brands are almost always the best deal. At our regular store, the 12 oz packages are almost always on sale for $0.88. We get two meals out of each package, putting the cost at about $0.22/serving.
Fries and Pizza
Non-name brand french fries are frequently half the cost of the big names, and potatoes are potatoes. The frozen pizza that costs $4.99 across the street is frequently $1.50-$2.00 cheaper at the grocery store. (If not, we don't get one.)
Ice Cream
Our store has a 'premium' ice cream that is about a third the cost and usually has better ingredients. Back before diabetes came to live with us, we bought the giant buckets of ice cream - about $4.00 for 3 gallons. And every bit as good as any other option.
Frankly, we don't buy much else in this section. But, what we do buy, we buy on sale.
Canned and Boxed
Side Dishes
These are convenience foods - open a box, add milk and fat, and poof! a side dish. Throw in a little protein and it's a complete meal. Store brands are affordable, but all of them are full of preservatives and sodium.
With a little time and effort, I promise - you can make your own equivalent for less. And you'll be cutting down on the sodium and chemicals in your diet. Leave these on the shelf.
Vegetables
We just don't buy canned veggies. They are heavily processed, have far less nutritional value, and just don't taste as good as the frozen version. Except for tomatoes and tomato products.
Instead of canned sauces and chili, we tend to buy the ingredients and make our own. It's more cost effective and we know what we're eating. Trust me, canned tomatoes or tomato paste aren't much different from brand to no-brand (with the exception of the really inexpensive generic, white labels). Don't pay more for the pretty label or big name.
Coffee and Tea
If you are into caffeine - as we are - this may be one area where compromise simply isn't possible. Cheaper no-name coffee and tea are rarely the same quality as name brands. They cost less because there is more filler (coffee) or poorer quality leaves (tea).
Our answer? Stock up when our favorites are on sale.
Paper, Plastic, and Cleaning Supplies
Paper
In a nutshell, we buy 4-packs of Kroger-brand toilet paper. It's similar to Scott-brand, but about 1/3 the price. And it lasts forever, compared to the cushy soft kinds. Generic paper napkins are usually good for daily use.
Plastic
The same with storage and trash bags. Most of the store brands are fine. Just don't necessarily buy the cheapest, and check the mils (thickness) on the trash bags.
Cleaning Supplies
For liquid dish soap (we don't have a dishwasher), this is a case where the store versions tend to not work as well. They seem to be watered down, so you end up using much more and erase any possible savings. It's easy to get a mid-range option - such as Ajax - on sale and stock up.
With laundry products, less is more. "Everyday Cheapskate" has a great recipe for laundry detergent that saves a fortune. And, instead of fabric softener, one-half to one cup of vinegar in the final rinse helps soften without perfumes. Hard water? Add one-half cup non-iodized salt to the wash water and get rid of the dinginess.
For other cleaning situations, I suggest "Pioneer Thinking" Cleaning Solutions section and - again - "Everyday Cheapskate" columns. There are recipes and tips, enabling anyone to avoid paying high prices by making their own supplies.
Bottom Line
No matter what you need, there is a cheaper way to get it. P&G eSaver Coupons are one of my favorites. They load right onto your store shopping card; no clipping or schlepping or forgetting. Most are good for about 90 days, so if you're waiting for a sale - the coupons will be there when you need them. And they come right to your email inbox.
Several columns and blogs are dedicated to helping you save time and money. One I just discovered is Deal Seeking Mom. If you weren't aware, a lot of people offer coupons on eBay. (Learned that one from DSM.)
Finally, don't buy what you won't use. A great deal isn't, if it's something that will just take up space and gather dust.
Order Early and Save!
In honor of Cyber Monday and saving stress -
All Afghan Orders received before December 1st
will receive an immediate 10% off!
Miscellaneous Afghan 003
There may be 26 shopping days until Christmas, but when you add in shipping (and crocheting) times - those days disappear faster than Santa up the chimney.
Cozy Afghan 002
Some of our designs (like this --> Afghan) are elegant in their simplicity and come together quickly. Even the largest size, 48"x75", could easily be at your door in about 2 weeks. As could either of our Quick Afghans.
Other styles, and larger sizes, are going to require a little more time and effort. (This <-- Cozy Afghan falls somewhere in the middle.)
It's a bit like the difference between my neighbor's short (wash, shake, and go) hairstyle, and my long (where did I hide the mousse, gel, and magic wand) look. We all get gorgeous, eventually; just takes a tad more work for some of us to make it.
My point is: To ensure delivery by December 24th - we ask that you order:
- Small (36"x36"), Medium (36"x48"), and Quick Afghans (not Full & Queen) by December 10th
- All other sizes by December 3rd
Why Wait?! Order today -- and save 10% !
What's Your Style?
Cozy Afghan 002
As you well know, JMark Afghans, etc. was created with the belief that you (the customer) should tell us (the crocheters) what you want. You shouldn't have to get almost what I wanted , when you can get exactly what I wanted. We call it 'designing' your own afghan.
It is that difference, I believe, that sets us apart from many others. (That and the fact that we offer a huge number of color options.)
Personally, I don't want exactly what everyone else has - I prefer to be unique. Put my own spin on what I own. What about you?
Do you jump on the latest and greatest products; the first on your block to own it? Or is your preference something a little less in-every-home? Share your thoughts.
Marvelous Disappearing Acne ... Product
Well, here we go again.
I was reading NanoCleanse reviews - OK, they were mostly sites claiming to offer reviews, but simply repeating the same statements as the site that came before - when I ran into a bit of a problem.
It seems that there is no 'official site' for this acne miracle. And, I must admit, I think that's a first for me. Even when all you have is a couple of pages of keyword-stuffed hype, at least someone took five minutes to throw words at a domain.
And no matter how iffy the product, there are pictures available. Nope; no pictures. This is just ... odd.
...]
And getting odder.
Usually, doing a search for random phrases will hit the source pages for a product. Not with this one. I used testimonials and ended up with a completely different product. The ingredients list, however, led me to another which-product-is-which dilemma.
From more than one 'review' site:
Product 'N' ingredients include 5% benzoyl peroxide, 2% salicylic acid, and 0.1% sulfur, water, shea butter, glycerin, Stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, PEG-100 stearate, jojoba oil, stearyl alcohol, walnuts shells, cocamidopropyl betaine, potassium cocoate, fragrance, allantoin, avocado oil, propylene glycol, hydrated magnesium, aluminum silicate, xanthan gum, citracidal, acai, soy protein, algae complex, flax seed oil, alfalfa powdered extract, azelaic acid, barley, buckwheat, malt, primrose extract, glycolic acid, hydrolyzed wheat protein, lavender oil, rosemary extract, sweet orange oil, tea tree oil, vitamin A palmitate, garlic, cayenne pepper, DMAE, and lactobacillus acidophilus.
Product 'M' ingredients include 5% benzoyl peroxide, 2% salicylic acid, and 0.1% sulfur, water, shea butter, glycerin, Stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, PEG-100 stearate, jojoba oil, stearyl alcohol, walnuts shells, cocamidopropyl betaine, potassium cocoate, fragrance, allantoin, avocado oil, propylene glycol, hydrated magnesium, aluminum silicate, xanthan gum, citracidal, acai, soy protein, algae complex, flax seed oil, alfalfa powdered extract, azelaic acid, barley, buckwheat, malt, primrose extract, glycolic acid, hydrolyzed wheat protein, lavender oil, rosemary extract, sweet orange oil, tea tree oil, vitamin A palmitate, garlic, cayenne pepper, DMAE, and lactobacillus acidophilus.
Again, none of the review sites had product images for either item. But - and this rather surprised me - I did manage to find the main site for Product 'M' . Little did I know, the surprises were just beginning.
All of the pages I looked at had no content. Even the home page is just one giant image file with a supposed video and formatted paragraphs still containing the filler Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, text. Looking closely under the 'video,' I noticed bottles of acne products - Proactiv acne products. See? Odd!
Certainly the order page would give more information about Product 'M' , right? Not so much. Clicking on 'Buy Now' took me to a shopping cart containing one bottle of Acnexia - the Product 'A' from my post earlier this month.
I am officially, totally, completely, and utterly done with this mess. Except to strongly suggest that ordering acne treatment online epitomizes the term crap shoot. (Heavy emphasis on the crap.)
Was Black Friday a Success?
It's not that I hate shopping; in fact, I love to shop. From the comfort of my living room.
The older I get, the more the crowds and frenetic atmosphere just plain wear me out before I even get started. Not to mention, I cannot imagine crawling out of a perfectly comfortable, warm and toasty bed just to battle cold weather, traffic jams, lack of parking, and bargain-crazed individuals. Not at 3:00 a.m.
So, I will live the holiday madness vicariously - once again. Fill up the comments, dear readers! Where did you shop? What did you find? And, most importantly, what was your best deal-of-the-day?
Opening a Box Without Opening a Finger
We have a utility knife stashed in every corner of the house. There's even one in the kitchen drawer. And we use them all the time.
From opening the mail (I hate papercuts) to cutting tape for packages, it never ceases to amaze me how often they come in handy.
Bags of frozen veggies? Not a problem. Stubborn rip-proof shipping envelopes? Piece of cake. (Okay, they're probably not good on cake.)
...]
Of course, most of our utility knives are dollar-store specials. Who knew that they come with cutting guides - a guard that keeps the blade at the same depth, all the way around the box? (It also keeps the blade away from your fingers.)
The safety knives? Incredible. You can extend the blade to, for example, open a box. Once you pull the knife away from the edge, the blade retracts - even if you have the slider pushed forward.
All in all, I got quite an education. And if you've ever sliced your fingers, trying to get into that blister pack, this may be just what you need, too.
Thrifty Thursday: Shop Early and Shop Smart
Since I will be face-down in a pumpkin pie tomorrow, we're being thrifty a day early this week. In keeping with the spending orgy that is the weekend after Thanksgiving, it seems appropriate to examine holiday shopping ideas.
Be sure to come back for the rest of our great food shopping ideas next time.
I have been reading (voraciously) a great column on creators.com that offers ideas for living below your means. Among other things, this is a lifestyle of paying off debt, using cash not credit, and getting the Best Buy possible - on everything.
This is not learning to live without, but learning to choose wisely. About giving up bad financial habits and, to borrow an overused phrase, thinking outside the box.
I have always believed you should never pay full price, never buy retail, when there are so many other options. Why do you think Black Friday is such a huge shopping day? Everyone loves a great deal.
Who wants to pay $400.00 for a desktop CPU when it's available for $190.00 - with free shipping? Not me. And, certainly, not you. Right?
What about 3 sets of iPhone earphones for, not $30.00, but less than $7.00? You've now got stocking stuffers for three iPhone users for just over $2.00 each. Brilliant!
Other holiday shopping tricks? Start picking things up as early as possible. You can take advantage of sales, spend a little here and a little there, and avoid paying full price in a panic to get something under (or on) the tree.
Set a budget and stick to it. Look at how much money you can afford to spend - realistically afford. Put aside for food, gifts, and decorations. When the money is gone, you're done. Period. No credit cards allowed.
I can't say it enough: Shop early -- and shop smart! Your bank account will thank you. And you might just find that your stress level is much, much lower this year.
Sears And Kmart eGifting on Facebook
As a recovering Facebook junkie, I understand the call of the games. After all, those dragons need killing, crops need planting, and rivals need {bwah-ah-ah} defeating!
Who has time for things like meals, and cleaning, and shopping?
Kmart and Sears understand. Together with eGift Social, they have launched a unique program for Facebook members.
It couldn't be easier. Simply visit http://www.facebook.com/kmart or http://www.facebook.com/sears fan pages. Select the eGift Cards tab and follow the steps.
The beauty is this isn't just for Facebook friends. You can use this application to send a virtual gift card to anyone you know. All you need is their email address.
In denominations from $5.00 to $25.00, it sounds like a great idea to me. What about you?
Great Ideas from WWF
Everyone is familiar with book-of-the-month, fruit-of-the-month, and even dessert- or cheese-of-the-month clubs. Order once and your loved ones get 12 months of goodies. (Darn! Now I'm hungry for cheese and apples.)
WWF has taken this lovely gift idea to heart with their Adoption of the Month Club. Each month, they send information about one of 12 endangered or critically endangered animals. Along with an adorable plush critter.
I'm rather fond of the Tub of Cubs, myself.
Healthy Mall Food
Admittedly, I haven't been inside a mall in a very long time. And the food court was never my favorite part. Give me the hot pretzel stand, any day.
But, an article on healthy mall food did catch my eye today. I'm just not so sure that I agree with their assessment of healthy, or even healthier. Perhaps, it's all perspective.
Looking at calories, not bad. Even the fat isn't all that egregious. But, oh my stars! the sodium!
First, let's look at DRIs for sodium. From ages 9 to 50, regardless of gender, the range runs 1,500mg to 2,300mg per day. The lower end being preferred intake levels; the upper end being the maximum daily intake believed to be safe.
Granted, none of these meals touch a Double Whopper with cheese: 1,061 calories, 68g fat (28g sat.), 58g protein, 61g carbs, 6g fiber, and 1,544mg sodium. Or a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese: 734 calories, 45g fat (18g sat.), 47g protein, 40g carbs, 3g fiber, and 1,333mg sodium. Although a couple try to come close.
There's a Mayan Chicken Salad that sounds absolutely delicious: slow-cooked chicken over brown rice and topped with field-greens; but - Calories 510; Fat 13g (sat 3g); Protein 27g; Carbohydrate 72g; Fiber 4g; Sodium 870mg - the carbs and sodium are pretty high. For me, allowed 1,600 calories per day and low blood pressure, this would be about a third and that's not bad. For Mark, who is a sodium-sensitive slightly-hypertensive diabetic, it wouldn't be the best choice.
The Asian Sesame Chicken Salad, Calories 400; Fat 20g (sat 3.5g); Protein 31g; Carbohydrate 31g; Fiber 3g; Sodium 810 mg, has high-fructose corn syrup and preservatives in the reduced-sugar dressing. Not so great. Although, it does have lower carbs, fat, and sodium than my favorite Southwest Chicken Salad at 501 calories, 22g fat (6g sat.), 28g protein, 51g carbs, 7g fiber, and 1,259mg sodium.
I'm gonna miss that salad.
An Alternative to Bottled Water
I am a huge believer in not buying bottled water. Discarded plastic accounts for way too much of the content of our landfills. And it's just plain expensive.
Running across a wholesale water filter site today, reminded me that having great drinking water is easy and inexpensive. We use a faucet-mount unit that, for about $17.00 a month, gives us somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 gallons (378 liters for you metric users). That works out to $0.17/gal and $0.05/liter.
In Arizona, no one leaves the house without fluids. It's simply too hot and the risk of dehydration too great. Finding a way to compensate is important to all of us. Without, hopefully, breaking the bank.
Yes, you'll have to get the unit and reusable water bottles - one-time expenses and frequently (at least out here) on sale. Our first unit lasted almost 10 years, which works out to about $3.00/year. And we have some terrific travel mugs, the kind with no handles, that I got on sale for something like $3.00/each at the corner store.
Think about it. Where in the world can you buy a one-liter bottle of water for a nickel? (Even on sale at my local store, the best I could find was about 12 1/2 cents per bottle.) Or a gallon for seventeen cents?
And you're not adding to the ever increasing mounds of garbage piling up all over our planet. Sounds like a win-win to me.
Designer Goodies
I've never been big on designer products. Not because they aren't
great - I'm sure they are. It just never really mattered to me what
'name' was on my bag or my jeans or those great sandals.
Honestly? I think I could be persuaded, after having a look at some Gucci
items. This bag, for example? Just love it! And who knew they offer
clothing and shoes?
Granted they are just a tad outside my price range and comfort level,
but there are a lot of goodies out there. Maybe ... someday.
Great Ideas for the Holidays
I must admit, I am an 'Ooh, special!' and 'Ohh, yummy!' kinda person.
But I am also extremely fond of great deals on great products.

With an emphasis on "Ohh, yummy!" - Eilenberger Bakery is a great place to start. It's hard to go wrong with a company that has been doing this since 1898. (I'm hiding this page from Mark, who is a died-in-the-wool chocolate and fruitcake junkie.)
And homemade goodies that don't involve destruction of my itty-bitty kitchen? Marvelous!
Okay, I'm a citrus junkie! I confess! Lemons and limes, oranges and grapefruits! Ohh, and tangerines and tangelos! The tart and sweet "Ohh, yummy!" in my life.
The average store sells fruit that was harvested long before it was ripe, in order to (hopefully) have it appear ripe when it hits that store. Wouldn't you love better?!
We're heading into the biggest travel time of the year - Thanksgiving and Christmas.
It's stressful enough, battling crowds and dealing with airport security; why pay more than you have to? The earlier you book, the better. But many great last minute deals are available, too.
Check out the possibilities and take a little of the angst out of your holidays.
With everything more expensive today than it was yesterday, knowing where to turn and what to do can be daunting.
May I suggest turning down the heat and turning up the warmth - with a cozy, comfy, one-of-a-kind Afghan? When going out is too expensive, why not cuddle up on the couch and pop in your favorite DVD? A big bowl of popcorn and you're all set.
Don't wait for Christmas - order now. Remember 15% of every Afghan order goes to help Rachel Hunnicutt-Knight. What better gift to give this year?
Looking Backward to Look Forward
Amazingly, this year is almost over. Time to think about calendars
for the new year. And, just maybe, where we were last year at this
time.
Looking back, I discovered that on this day - one year ago - I was
updating my Zazzle
calendars. On this very day. So, apparently, one of my annual
traditions is creating new calendars on November 2nd.
Odd. But, tradition is tradition. (Darn it! Now, I have to go watch
"Fiddler on the Roof") [Continue Reading ...]
I also found, looking
back at last November, that I was writing about protecting
grizzlies, cell phones taking offense and hiding, hand dryers and
H1N1, cheesecake recipes, and a myriad of other odd musings.
Revisiting previous posts may seem silly. But, honestly? What better
way to see what topics were most important, how life was treating
us, and whether my 'voice' has changed over time? That last one may
be the most important.
It helps me see where software and/or processes might be impeding my
spontaneity and creativity. Where my work focuses too much on how it
looks, rather than what I want to say. I've run across a couple of
posts from more than a year ago that, I felt, were incredibly
well-written. Perhaps better than some of the more recent articles.
That gives me a lot to think about. And inspires me to get my new
2011 calendars and start planning an exciting new year of articles
and posts - pointing my energies in the right direction. Have you
started thinking about the new year; plans for 2011?
MMM: Bargain or Bad Idea?
We routinely take a multiple vitamin; with the occasional B-complex
tab for stress. Good vitamins aren't inexpensive. But, the
alternative - cheap
vitamins, with mystery ingredients - is just not worth the risk.
Since it's tough for us to travel the valley in search of the best
deal, we tend to shop within walking distance. (My walking distance,
not Mark's.) Stores like the one on the corner capitalize on that.
Knowing I should be able to get a better deal online - I went
shopping.
Once again, the first site I found was a huge disappointment.
Calling diet pills (and acne treatments) 'vitamins' doesn't make it
true. But, I have to admit, the purchase buttons, next to the blank
Vitamin options, were kind of fun.
Copper Sinks
Our apartments have to have the smallest kitchens in the state of Arizona, if not the entire lower 48.
It is, therefore, my fondest hope, frequent daydream, and secret desire (okay, not so secret) that one day we will have a kitchen that we can actually both occupy - at the same time.
Well, that and a second bedroom / bathroom, huge master suite, spacious patio / balcony, enormous storage space; you get the idea.
The lack of overall space is aggravating. However, today, I am fixated solely on the kitchen. "Why?" you ask. It's really quite simple, actually: copper farmhouse sinks. No, seriously.
Not only are these sinks beautiful, they're actually healthier. Copper, by its nature, is an antimicrobial. Bacteria that survives for weeks or months on stainless steel surfaces, is killed in a matter of hours on a copper sink.
In fact, one 2004 study showed that the amount of Salmonella enterica on a copper surface was actually non-infective after 2 hours of contact at 25°C. At 4 hours, the results were even more dramatic. Of course, that doesn't mean you don't have to keep the sink clean, as you normally would.
It just means if you don't get it perfectly sanitized, the risk of cross-contamination is greatly reduced. Pretty cool, if you ask me. Now, I just need more room.
Keeping the Peace in the Bedroom
There are few rooms in the house that can create conflict like the bedroom. No, not for that reason. I'm talking about decorating conflict.
It has been my experience that most men won't notice what color the sheets are, or whether there are curtains or shades on the windows. They will, however, immediately and loudly say "NO" to flowers and frills all over the bed, and the bedroom. Which must be why designs like those from Matouk are popular.
With subtle patterns, in enough colors to satisfy any decorating scheme, the bedding is luxurious without being overly ... gender-specific. Personally, I can't imagine anyone being unable to find just what they want. But then, the way I look at it, in the dark with my eyes closed - all sheets look alike.

Just for You ~ from JMark Afghans and Limoges Jewelry:

I {heart} Sweaters
The most difficult thing about living in Arizona is the heat - which means there are maybe 5 minutes in any given year where you can wear a sweater. I love sweaters; I own a lot of sweaters. I can't remember the last time I actually wore one.
Still, it's hard to give up the idea of cozy, comfy cashmere sweaters, especially around the holidays. One Christmas a friend gave me the most beautiful, hand-beaded sweater, unlike anything I had ever seen. And, although I really don't like pink, one of my all-time favorites was a gorgeous, long sweater my mother gave me that I wore until it almost literally fell apart.
I don't know why, but it's easier to get someone a sweater that fits well. Trying to buy either of my guys a long-sleeve shirt is a nightmare. Every sweater fits like a dream.
Don't tell - but I know what I'll be putting under the tree this year. Now I just need that 5 minutes of cool weather.
Finding the Right Bluetooth Headset
Personally, I love having a Bluetooth headset.
I started using them when Mark was first home from the hospital, but still very sick. No matter where I went - grocery shopping, quick trip to the corner store - there was no worry that I wouldn't hear a call or that I couldn't answer because I driving. Great peace of mind, when you live with someone who has a chronic illness.
However, like most things, we're a little tough on our headsets. If we don't lose them - or parts of them - we tend to use them to death. Hence, we are looking to replace at least one, if not both of our units - again.
Mark's favorite style has an ear bud, with soft foam covers, that frequently fall off and disappear. The mechanism (and I use the term loosely) that holds everything together is a tiny elastic band. Once that breaks, the earpiece will not stay on. Despite regularly losing parts, Mark likes the style because it doesn't reach too far into the ear.
For that same reason, plus the falling apart business, I really don't like that model. With my iffy hearing, I have to have something that practically attaches itself to the hearing center of my brain. Not to mention, since I wear glasses about 95% of the time, any part that hooks over my ear must be extremely thin. Otherwise, it falls off or pushes my glasses into the side of my head or cocks the frames to the point that I can't see properly. Serious pain in the ... {ahem} ... ear.
Since we're forced to do our shopping online, we run the risk of getting something that just doesn't work and returns are a serious - often expensive - inconvenience. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
What Do You Do When a Product is Just Bad?
I rarely snark at product manufacturers because I believe they already
know they're putting out ... forgive the phrase ... crap. Not all
manufacturers, mind you; just the ones that inspire me to scream
obcsenities at the ceiling. You know, and I know, and THEY know that
what they're selling isn't exactly top-of-the-line. And then there's
something called "Farmhouse." [Continue Reading
...]
Let me start with what "Farmhouse" offers - boxed pasta and rice side
dishes to accompany whatever else you're cooking. Nothing new,
conceptually; yet, judging by the box, something preferable to all the
others. The claim on the box is why I decided to try them: "NO
Artificial Ingredients or Preservatives. NO MSG Added." (Okay, it was
also on sale.)
Now, admittedly, I didn't look at the instructions - I'm buying boxed
side dishes: water, milk, butter, heat, done. At least 99.99999% of
every box has requires the same additions and time. Who checks the
details before starting dinner? Oooh, I should have!
There were so many things that just didn't work, I actually composed a
complaint. For now, I haven't sent it, but I may just tell them:
I recently purchased your product, for the first time, and am
extremely disappointed - for a number of reasons. The point of buying
boxed sides is speed and convenience - this product offers neither.
-
I can and generally do make pasta and sauce, from scratch, with
less effort and in less time;
-
After 18 minutes of 'stirring constantly' and 5 minutes of
"sitting" it was still soupy and the pasta was bordering on too
done;
-
There was zero cheese (or any other) flavor in the end result;
-
Had to add cornstarch to thicken the sauce - why did I buy this,
again?;
-
Adding salt and pepper, liberally, recovered a modicum of flavor -
not flavorful, by any standards, simply less tasteless;
-
Wasting time, trying to fix this product, caused the rest of the
meal to be overcooked / cold by the time we were able to sit down
to dinner;
-
My husband is a diabetic who must choose his carbs carefully -
this was a seriously bad option;
-
After careful consideration, we threw out the "White Cheddar" and
made due with chicken and mixed vegetables.
I tried your product for the "NO Artificial Ingredients or
Preservatives. NO MSG Added" on the box. (It was also heavily
reduced in price.) Admittedly, I did not check the preparation
instructions before I brought it home. And, honestly, I shouldn't
have had to. It's a boxed side dish - by implication quick and easy.
I might have put up with the labor-intensive preparation process if
- and this is a big IF - there had been any quality or taste in the
end product. As it stands, I will probably never use the other 2
boxes - Herb & Butter and Fettuccine Alfredo - that I purchased at
the same time. (If you knew me, you'd know that giving up either of
those flavors is not in my genetic makeup.)
Your products are seriously substandard. I will never waste my money
on them again.
I can't say - "Don't buy "Farmhouse" ... stuff. Okay, I can, but
probably shouldn't. Then again, this was something that just didn't
taste - at all. And took longer to prepare than a teenager heading to
college.
Have you tried this? Did it turn out better than my experience? Or
just as bad? Or ... worse?
Final question - should I tell "Farmhouse" what I think?
Netbooks, Notebooks, and Laptops ~ Oh, My!
Recently, as mentioned, we bought another new laptop. I had been researching options, with the intention of replacing the slower machine at my leisure, when the ThinkPad bit the dust. Suddenly, I was in immediate need of a replacement and more understanding of netbooks, notebooks, and laptops ~ Oh, My!
Trying to prioritize my wish-list, I started with processor details. Okay, I actually started with prices. Despite the fact that Frankie is toting around something that retailed between cha-ching! and Good-Golly-Miss-Molly and makes me drool everytime I look at the screen, I was neither able nor willing to part with that kind of cash. That eliminated, right off the top, a huge range of options.
Having narrowed the options, I went back to considering processors. A notebook that bogs down with 2 windows open is not going to help me get my work done. I've been known to have at least 2 windows and upwards of 8 tabs open at any given time. When you can smell the processor fighting to function, you know you're in trouble.
With mini-laptops, the usual processor is something from Intel called
Atom. And while I prefer AMD processors, it didn't seem that I was
going to get the same power from either option in the netbook realm.
While probably untrue in some cases, I wasn't sure I wanted to risk
getting something that wouldn't do what I needed.
Memory was my other big concern, since I'd been spending time battling
to get games to play, pages to load, and Firefox to function. The
netbooks, notebooks, and laptops I found all offered at least 1GB of
RAM, so that wasn't the problem I had expected. Although, I did find
that the ones in my price range weren't expandable. The RAM it came
with was all I would ever have - good to know.
When push came to shove and all of the pieces and parts were
considered, I just didn't think I'd be happy with an Acer Netbook or a
Presario Mini-Laptop. Not when I could get a full-sized version with a
processing system that I knew would do the job and a keyboard that
wasn't scrunched into a very small footprint. I suppose, if I
travelled with my computer, the smaller notebook / netbook would have
it's advantages.
For sitting at home, working on three or four projects at a time, I
just needed more bang for the buck. So far, I'm really happy with my
choice; so happy that we're thinking of replacing the desktop with
another laptop.
I'd love to hear what you use and why. Desktop or laptop? Netbook or
notebook? Large footprint or smallish? How did you decide on what you
have. Is it working for you? Or are you making do because shopping for
a new computer is just a serious pain in the neck?
Document Scanning
When I first started working for a computer leasing company in Michigan,
we were a small operation. Document storage wasn't really much of an
issue. Over time, and acquisitions by larger companies, that changed.
Scanning documents became an urgent need. [Continue Reading

Quality scanning
software was also critical. By putting everything on tape, all
employees had immediate access to customer account information. But
the learning curve was interesting and some of the documents were
incredibly difficult to read.
After years of pulling a file and flipping through pages, using
electronic data took quite a bit of getting used to. So much
information was covered in notes and not all the notes seemed to make
it through the scanning process. It was a lesson in frustration.
In the final analysis, we had some employees who were seriously
conscientious, going above and beyond the basic requirements.
Everything they touched was complete, and just as useful as pulling
the physical file. They stayed and we all learned to adapt.
For anyone looking to scan documents into their system, I strongly
recommend good software that offers quality electronic records. And
several people who really care about what they do. I'm not certain
which is more important, truth be told.
Shop Manhattanite ~ Your Closet Will Thank You
Okay, I am officially in trouble. Why? One Word:

gotta-have-this items to fill my Christmas wish-list.

Starting with this gorgeous Racerback Ombre Top. The style is casual and simple; would look amazing with jeans
or leggings, belted or not; and isn't too much for a trip to the grocery store or a lunch with friends. But best of all?
This top is going to be comfortable in 100+ temps in Arizona. And that is absolutely critical. We tend to dress, even at the office, a lot more casually out here. Guess the heat makes the rules.
As far as bottoms to go with the top - I can't say I'm totally thrilled with the hip-hugger (well, that's what we used to call them) jeans style. But, in the right size, I probably wouldn't have to spend 2 hours a day on my abs. Probably. Hopefully.
Frankly, I just love the cut of the legs; since there is no way skinny jeans and I are ever going to be friends. Again, stylish without being too dressy for my lifestyle
. A cute pair of sandals, and I'm good to go anywhere.
Oh, and speaking of size - at Manhattanite
, I'm a much nicer size than many other stores. That alone makes them my new favorite store. Won't you join me?
I know they have something just perfect for you, too.
Hanna Pre-Season Holiday Sale
For years, I have tried to get in the habit of shopping early for the holidays. You know, buying a little here and a little there, as great bargains are available. Then, come December, there's no pressure, no last minute panic and rushing around; just wrapping and sneaking packages under the tree.
Not to mention, it is much easier (for me, anyway) to spread the cost out over several weeks. And I don't spend more than I should, because I'm not paying full price when I could have taken advantage of terrific sales - like this one at Hanna Andersson. With Sweaters and Dresses at $25.00 until October 24th, there is no doubt that shopping early and shopping often means I can actually get more (or do better) with my budget.
I know that I would much rather be baking cookies and hanging ornaments in the week or so before Christmas, instead of chasing my tail, fighting the crowds, and hoping that I can still find the right item in the right size. In our case, we don't have a lot of local family. What we buy has to be shipped, meaning the earlier we get done, the greater our chances of helping everyone's Christmas run smoothly.
Plus, seriously, how can you resist these adorable - organic cotton! - long johns? Unless you live in the Southwest, in just a few weeks, the weather is going to be getting colder and colder. Kids waiting for the bus in the morning will appreciate being warm and cozy.
Years ago, I wore long johns or leg warmers under my longer skirts during the frosty Michigan winters. While running from the car to the office or cleaning the ice and snow off the car to go to work in the morning, I pulled the legs down to my shivering ankles. At the office, I tucked them back up and went about my business. Saved my skinny little legs on many days, I promise.
Wouldn't you love to see the kids (and grandkids) in these adorable Sweaters, Dresses, and cozy Long Johns? And, while you're at it, why not add a Banded Afghan in coordinating colors?
Great Ways to Say Thanks
It's not intentional and it certainly isn't personal. I'm just horribly bad about sending thank-you cards / notes. Always have been. There may be hope, however.

Imagine what new parents, or newlyweds, go through. Dozens (or more) gifts equals dozens (or more) thank-you notes. With everything else on their plate, now they have to sit down and scribble over and over on boring little cards. Yecch.
But ... put cute pictures of the baby - or great shots from the honeymoon trip - into a collage on the front of a thank-you card and voila! Now it's fun getting those notes out; sharing with friends and family. Even I wouldn't mind sending thank-you's like these.
If I could just find that pen ... and the stamps ... and my address book ...
Ideas for Reducing Dark Circles
With a product for every 'occasion' and possible problem, it's only natural (pardon the pun) that someone would start claiming the best eye cream for dark circles. But, that really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. How can slathering something under the eye help remove dark circles?
First, I guess I need a working definition. There are (wouldn't you just know it) a couple. Long nights, a few too many apple-tinis, and allergy season can puff up the eyes, creating dark shadows that look terrible, but usually disappear with rest and rehydration and allergy treatment. Not quite the condition I meant; onward and upward.
According to the Mayo Clinic, true dark circles aren't eliminated with a quieter social life and may even be hereditary. (Thanks, Mom and Dad!) Smoking, alcohol use, and caffeine consumption; chronic nasal congestion and allergies; and good old aging, thinning skin contribute to development of these permanent discolorations under the eyes. (Now, that's what I was looking for and looking at in the mirror.)
Can 'special' creams and lotions really get rid of these circles? Probably only if you have the short-term, lifestyle kind. One study showed that a cream containing vitamins K, C, E, and retinol did have a moderate effect on undereye circles. Not fountain-of-youth effective, but helpful.
Looking for a more realistic approach? Reducing caffeine, alcohol, and cigarette consumption is never a bad idea. Dehydration, the contributing factor in hangovers and puffy eyes, is common with caffeine, as well. Eliminating cigarettes will also slow the development of those ooh-I-got-smoke-in-my-eye wrinkles and crinkles.
Faithfully, wearing sunglasses and sunscreen around the eyes is also great advice. While a tan may make dark circles less noticeable at first, eventually the increased melanin in the undereye area will actually make the circles look much worse. And we all know that sun damage just doesn't get better with more sun exposure.
If you have allergies and chronic sinus problems, the veins from the eyes to the nose dilate and become much more noticeable. Saline rinses and sprays help keep nasal passages clear and reduce overall congestion. When I was pregnant with my daughter and developed a horrible head cold, we went with the nasal rinse option. Although it felt really odd at first, it did help reduce the congestion.
You can get saline sprays at the corner drug store or make your own rinse. One-quarter teaspoon sea salt in 2 cups warm water is the recommended ratio. (Chemical nasal sprays are much harsher and tend to create a rebound effect with prolonged use. Not the best choice for recurring issues.)
I sleep with two pillows to keep my head elevated. It helps keep fluid from accumulating in the areas around my eyes and, basically, clogging up my sinuses. We also run an ionizer in the bedroom (and living room), to keep dust and allergens at bay.
Sinuses not the problem? (I officially envy you!) Take a tip from the spa - cool tea bags, cucumber slices, or even just chilled teaspoons over the eyes give a temporary lift to the area, probably because it takes down the overall puffiness. As a periodic migraine sufferer, I know that a cold compress on the eyes just plain feels good.
If my sinus problems, caffeine addiction, and smokers-remorse weren't enough, I have pale skin. Veins just show more. Then, add the fact that I've reached a time in life when my pasty, white skin is thinning and losing collagen. (My God! I'm hideous!)
Joking aside, I do have some circles under my eyes. Some days they're not so noticeable; other days, I could pack for a 3 week cruise. It's just a matter, for now, of treating my skin better. And laying off some of the bad habits.
Especially since there is no way - in this or any other lifetime - that anyone is ever going to inject anything into my face. Ever! No, uh uh!!
Eco-Friendly Tips, Tricks, and Products
We are (or at least try to be) conscious of our carbon footprint. Wherever possible, we support green, eco-friendly businesses and/or products. And avoid patronizing companies and businesses that we know are environmentally irresponsible on their best day.
Our light bulbs are low-energy, we don't buy bottled water (we own a faucet-mount filter), and we keep the lights off in empty rooms. I prefer bleach for disinfecting and good old soap and hot water still gets our hands clean. It's not that we're militant. More that we try to do our part, as best we can.
I think we fall short when it comes to our cleaning and laundry supplies; something I hadn't really thought about until I discovered a book with recipes for making natural products. Truly, vinegar, baking soda, borax (I think that was one of the ingredients), natural oils and plant extracts are much cheaper than the chemical-laden items on the store shelves. And we don't have to worry about what we're washing into our ecosystem when we clean the sink or launder our unmentionables.
Drugstore.com understands that many, many consumers prefer products that don't harm the environment or fill us full of chemicals. There are more eco-friendly options on the market than I'm familiar with, I'm sure. (Another area where we could improve.) TheNaturalStore.com
- with natural choices for health, home, family, and beauty - is designed to take the guesswork out of responsible shopping.
It doesn't matter whether you're looking for tarte cosmetics

(have you tried these?) or Seventh Generation
(one of my favorites, but hard to find in my neighborhood), TheNaturalStore.com
has what you need. Did you know that there are chlorine-free diapers? I didn't, but I love that someone created them.
What are your favorite 'green' products? Are there companies that you avoid, because of their environmentally abusive practices? Share your eco-tips and tricks. Heaven knows, unless you're living in the woods off the land, we can all find a little bit better way to protect our environment and ourselves.

Back when I was just out of high school, a series of greeting cards with the sweetest teardrop-eyed faces I had ever seen appeared in stores. Before long, Enesco began offering sculptures based on the cards. They sold out faster than the stores could stock them.
For those who, like me, love the figurines - you may be as surprised as I was by the range of Precious Moments items these days. As a stuffed critter junkie, I naturally gravitate toward the plush animals. More than just kittens and puppies (though they're adorable, too), the elephant, lion, and monkey just beg to come home with you.
Or at least, that's what they say to me! Frankly, I think the bears and frogs (don't ask!) need some company. (Oh, honeeeeey! I know what I want for my birthdaaaay!)
Having never thought about it, I found it interesting to watch how Precious Moments are made. From drawing to figurine, there are a lot of very talented people involved. Most impressive to me? Turning a 2-dimensional drawing into a 3-dimensional sculpture. (How do they know what's on the other side of the page?)
Of course, I also love the gentle colors and matte finish. And just wait until you see the little glow-in-the-dark stars. No matter what the occasion, there is a beautiful way to celebrate your Precious Moments.
Customized Labels
When I think of labels what comes to mind, given my business, are cute little fabric labels to sew onto the afghans, hats, and scarves that I crochet. (I really need to order some, now that I think about it.) Obviously, there are a lot of custom labels that have absolutely nothing to do with clothes and accessories. Far more than I realized . . .
Need Customized Labels ?
Especially, when you take into account the warning labels, instructional labels, and operating labels that show up on so many of the products we touch every day.
Thinking about what I do, made me think about shipping labels, which made me think of that one custom label found on everything these days. The one with the barcodes. When, in fact, was the last time you bought anything that didn't have to be scanned first? It must be a huge industry, keeping the world covered in little bars.
Seriously, though. I never really thought about the finer points. Would using a printer that generates fuzzy graphics make the code completely unusable? Wonder if that's the problem when the cashier scans and scans and scans a product, then ends up manually entering the information.
Then again, I print shipping labels (with great big USPS barcodes) on my little HP all-in-one. And, thus far, everything's gotten where it was supposed to go and heaven knows I've gotten charged for the shipments. So, the critical equipment may well be the reader.
Guess I shouldn't take those barcode labels for granted. Should I?
Skin Care for Dummies (Me!)
Now that I can see that my skin has gone horribly, horribly wrong, the question is: What am I going to do? There are so many options. But, the answer is very simple.
. . .
Read More Skin Care for Dummies (Me!)
I have not got a clue! Is there a 'Skin Care for Dummies' out there?
To start, I need to get rid of the {unmentionable number of} years of neglect - meaning lots of dermabrasion. Also known as carefully sandpapering away the dead skin of a thousand lifetimes. Orbital sander notwithstanding, this is a fine line. As once you see bone you've, pretty much, gone too far.
Assuming I make it through Stage 1 without needing a transfusion and cheekbone reconstruction, I then have to find a way to nourish this (hopefully) new-found younger-looking skin. When my hands and feet turn into leather, I slather them with petroleum jelly, throw on clean white cotton socks and let the moisturizing begin.
Somehow I just don't think that's going to be a good recipe for my face. Not to mention - without a field of cotton, a gin, cards, spinning wheel, and a really big crochet hook - I am probably not gonna find a sock that big.
Frankly, after reading and researching all of the wondrous beauty products on the market, I'm leaning toward making my own skin care products. All-natural ingredients, designed to support what the skin does on its own. I've even found an intriguing book - written by a nutritionist/skin expert - that has a lot of information about how skin works and what it takes to keep it happy. Especially, after 40.
Years ago, when I still had reasonably healthy skin, I owned a book by Diane von Furstenberg that was filled with recipes for gentle, effective skin care. The ingredients were fairly inexpensive, easy to use, and did (as I recall) keep my skin looking healthy. Of course, at 20-something, that's probably not too difficult.
We'll see if the same process works 30 years later.
Scales
Many, many years ago, I baked bread - from scratch. The best recipes, I soon learned, don't measure by cups; they measure by weight. A kitchen scale was mandatory.
. . .
Read More Scales
When Mark got sick and his protein intake was strictly limited, I went shopping for scales again. Every serving of meat had to be meticulously weighed, and protein grams counted. It was, literally, a matter of life and death.
Eventually, I got to the point where I could guestimate pretty close to 4 oz. and didn't use the scale as much. But over time, having that scale has allowed us to buy in bulk, and weigh out individual portions for repackaging and freezing. I can't imagine being without a scale now.
Well ... there is one in the bathroom that I could do without.
Every Day Scrubs
Over the years, we have spent a great deal of time at the hospital. (Luckily, not so much lately.) In that time, I have fallen in love with the scrubs that the nurses wear. They look cool and comfortable - just what I need.
. . .
Read More Every Day Scrubs
For lounging in front of the laptop. Or even a run to the store for soda and smokes. Seriously!
I see students from the local nursing program at the corner store all the time. If they can wear that medical scrub top (and comfy pants) out and about - so can I. In this incredible summer heat, scrubs have to be more comfortable than even my jean shorts.
Don't get me wrong, I'd never throw on a lab coat or try to create a "doctor uniform." Although, if you haven't checked out the styles lately, you might be surprised at just how non-medical many lab coats look. I actually could see myself throwing one, just a simple white jacket, over a tank top and jeans for a lunch date or trip to the grocery store.
What I didn't expect to find was scrubs for kids. These are seriously cute and incredibly practical. With their easy-on tops and elastic-waist pants, how great they must be for busy parents.
For adults or kids, I imagine part of the attraction - beyond comfort - is that they wash and dry like a dream. Who needs to stand over an ironing board for hours every week? I own an iron, but that doesn't mean I routinely buy clothes that will ever get to meet it.

Auto Repair Estimates
It is incredibly rare that I get excited about working on my vehicle - or finding someone to work on my vehicle. There are some upfront issues - whether you need an oil change, a tune up, or something really big. It's going to cost more than you think. And it's going to cost more than they tell you in the estimate.
. . .
Read More Auto Repair Estimates
The other big issue is knowing which repair shop can be trusted. When our truck started overheating, we took it to a (supposedly) reputable chain. They replaced the thermostat and charged us plenty.
When the situation didn't improve, we called back. It was only then that we were told that 'old girl' had a blown head gasket. A new thermostat did nothing and they knew it. In fact, this probably made the situation worse, since we continued to drive the truck instead of getting the proper repairs done.
Today, I ran across a repair site that seems different. First, whether you're looking for Houston auto repair services or a tune-up specialist in Evans, Colorado - this is the place to start. RepairPal offers nationwide information and is not owned by or affiliated with any manufacturer, dealership, facility, or parts provider.
Second, they have a huge list of vehicles. So whether you own an Acura Integra or a Dodge Dakota that really needs some mechanic love and attention, you're going to be able to find yours. Fine-tune it down to the engine size, so you know that the estimates are accurate. (Who needs a quote for repairs on a 6-cylinder Dakota, when they own a 4-cylinder?)
Then, we get to the fun part - what work / repairs does your 'baby' need? I was amazed at the available detail. It took me no time at all to zoom in on Head Gasket(s) Replacement. And it doesn't matter where you start - repair, location, or vehicle. The site is that flexible.
My only concern is the rating system. It's a 5-star process, based on consumer reviews. Unfortunately, the few reviews I read sounded suspiciously similar. After 2 or 3 that ended with some version of "my mechanics for life," I started to wonder.
There may be some 'canned' reviews, which does bother me. However, one of the shops listed for our area had a dozen comments, spanning about 11 months, that appear to be from consumers who have used them for many years. I guess it's always a bit of a gamble, but RepairPal still seems like a good place to start.
Buying Glasses
Well, it's official. Being nearly blind is, in fact, expensive. Very
expensive. [Continue Reading ...]
I had convinced myself that, due to advancing age, my vision had
changed for the better. Seriously! I didn't have to hold my reading
material against my nose to see it anymore and, even from across the
room, I could almost make out faces on the TV. Better, right?!
Well, not so much. The best you could say is -- differently bad. In
fact, when I asked the eye doctor about the contacts I've been dying
to order he explained, "There wouldn't even be a 30-day lens, in the
world, for that left eye." Darned astigmatism!
But, looking on the bright side, I did get a pair of lined bifocals
(which everyone is worried I'm going to hate), 6 boxes of contact
lenses - per eye, and three years worth of eye exams (including 10%
off all purchases) for less than the glasses that are currently
falling off my face. I think I love America's Best!
Pricing Glasses
If I thought grocery shopping produced serious sticker-shock, I should
have remembered shopping for glasses. There's a heart-stopper if ever I
saw one. Especially, when it comes to specialty lenses, like mine.
I've been putting off getting new glasses for a very long time, now.
The prescription on my contacts is just as old and I can't really see
out of either. Add in the fact that my glasses are bent, the earpieces
are taped on - and you can see it's time to bite the bullet and head
to the eye doctor.
To that end, I have been doing some online pricing. It appears that
the 30-day multifocals I have been desperately wanting are not going
to happen, unless we suddenly hit the lottery. But the deals out there
on eyeglasses are pretty good.
The fact that I am seriously near-sighted, need bifocals, and have an
astigmatism in my left eye shouldn't make a difference. Right!? Oh,
yeah! It's gonna be expensive.
I can hear the Cha-Ching! already!

Horse Tack
I have a friend who raises horses and rides dressage. She knows about horse tack, but I had to do some research. Mostly to precisely define the phrase.
. . .
Read More Horse Tack
It was actually a lot simpler than I thought and I was not quite as ignorant as I feared (both good). By general definition, tack is the equipment used on a domesticated horse. This covers saddles, bridles, reins, harnesses, bits, stirrups, and halters.
But that isn't as cut-and-dried as it sounds. There are dressage saddles, show saddles, trail saddles, English saddles, youth saddles, and Western saddles. (And probably some I missed.) Bridles, stirrups, bits, halters, and martingales have similar options. And then there are the items that complete the riding set-up, such as girths, saddle pads and blankets, stirrup leathers and pads ... and ... and ...
And ... all of those options are just to be able to ride a horse. Don't even get me started on what it takes to care for that horse. Yup, my friend is a wonder woman!
Wireless Doorbells
It used to be that, in order to have a doorbell, you had to live in (and own) a house. No more! Now, everyone can have door chimes or even a song to greet visitors.
. . .
Read More Wireless Doorbells
In the olden days of my youth, doorbells were hard-wired into the house's electrical system. Something you couldn't do or have done to a rental unit. Well, unless you had a really nice landlord and wanted to leave your chimes when you moved. Not a good solution.
Today, battery-powered units offer more than 10 different tunes, play different sounds or songs for each door, and have sound quality so good you can actually recognize the song. There are even options to add receivers in other rooms. After all, a doorbell isn't much good if you don't hear it.
Baccarat Cigars?
I knew that Baccarat made jewelry, lighting, crystal objects, glassware, dishes (okay, calling them dishes is a bit of an understatement). Although I don't understand it, I know of Baccarat - the card game. But Baccarat cigars?
. . .

Granted, I'm not a cigar smoker. But it is a little embarrassing to realize that these Honduran, hand-rolled cigars have been around since 1871. Milder than some brands, they have what's called a sweetened wrapper cap.
Unless I miss my guess, that means flavor. And probably a much better smoke than the little grape things that Frankie used to buy.
Can't Have Too Many Mugs
I can't help it - I am a sucker for mugs. Coffee mugs, travel mugs, promotional mugs, tall mugs, fat mugs, skinny mugs - just love 'em. The more unusual and creative, the more I have to have them. I've even purchased dinnerware sets because the cups were unique. But, they aren't mugs.
. . .
Read More Can't Have Too Many Mugs
Mugs are sturdy, solid, reliable, and big. Trust me - I've done the research. Way back when, I actually had an entire kitchen cabinet dedicated to my addiction. (In those days, it was an affordable habit.) Everyone knew I collected, so any holiday was an occasion to find the silliest or sweetest (thank you, girlfriends!) sentiments on the market.
My favorite mug, hands down, was from the long-distance company where I worked. What made it special was the handle - shaped like a little blue telephone handset. The cutest thing I've seen - or owned - before or since.
(It was not, however, good for reheating! Something in the paint on that adorable handle made molten ceramic when combined with microwaves.)
These days, our mugs are great big, wonderful dollar-store finds - big, round, clear, with concave circles all around so these big, heavy coffee urns don't slip out of your hands. Did I mention they are big?! We have a 12-cup coffeemaker and filling 2 of these mugs puts a serious dent in the contents of the pot. Love it!
The cute little cups that came with my new dishes? They're in a drawer ... somewhere.
Oooh! Cool Shoes
Last Christmas, I got a surprise bonus and decided that it was time for new footwear. I do most of the running for the house, so I keep a pair of easy-on-easy-off shoes by the front door. My faithful sandals had split, been glued, split again, and kept my feet sopping wet whenever it rained. They had to go. Sadly, their replacements were horrible.
. . .
Read More Oooh! Cool Shoes
Counting on the name to mean quality and wearability, I bought the cutest little slip-ons. If memory serves I mentioned that, from the first time I wore them, they rubbed my heels and made them bleed. Even with socks! So, like it or not - cuz the ole tennies are just not cuttin' it for quick on and off - I need new shoes. Again.
I've been looking at, among other options, MBT shoes and am seriously fascinated. They call themselves "the anti-shoe" and offer a unique (well, I've never seen it before) curved sole that is supposed to be like walking barefoot in sand. More natural and healthy for the body.
Although the 'learn to walk a new way to keep from falling over' comment left this klutz a tad apprehensive.
Trying to Find Binoculars
Several years ago, in one of his buying moods (See? It's the whole house; not just me!), Mark bought a pair of binoculars. The kind with the camera, so we could travel the state and take great pictures. Well, that didn't work out too well, so I've been thinking about replacing them - as a little surprise. May not be as easy as I imagined.
. . .
Read About My Trying to Find Binoculars
I learned - very quickly - that there are a lot of options when it comes to binoculars. A whole big bunch of options! Depending on what you want to pay, what you want to use them for, and whether you need a camera, wide-angle viewing, or are visiting the opera.
Since what we have has a camera and my mind was spinning with available choices, I decided to start there. And was lucky enough to find something well within my price range. Unfortunately, I started thinking about all those other options and that, although Mark had picked the camera binoculars then, he might prefer something else now.
It just never pays to think and shop. Now, I'm back to square one and have absolutely no idea what to get. {sigh}
Modern Couches
We go through this every so often - gotta get a bigger apartment.
Sometimes it's because we've tripped over a pile of stuff, stubbed a
toe, or started feeling like a hoarder. Other times, it's because we'd
like to get new furniture that just wouldn't fit in our limited space.
Naturally, this need-more-stuff thought process leads me to online
shopping. Today, I decided to see what I could come up with in the way
of modern
couches. I have to say, I'm not sure that modern is exactly my
style. The straight lines and square designs don't really 'speak' to me.
And some of the free-form options just make me scratch my head.
Although, there was a sectional with a chaise that looked awfully,
awfully no-I-will-not-get-up-now-or-ever comfortable. So, perhaps I'd
best keep an open mind.
I Hate Grocery Shopping
I am hiding today. Why? Because we need to go grocery shopping and - shopaholic that I am - I hate grocery shopping! Hate it! Hate it! Hate it!
. . .
Why Do I Hate Grocery Shopping ?
First, it's expensive. Although the cost of living hasn't increased - according to our whiz-bang government - food is more and more expensive every time we set foot in the store. $4.00/lb for ground meat that's at least 20% fat is insane in my little corner of the universe.
Second, the quality of the products have gone downhill rapidly in recent years. Try to find a decent bag of potatoes or onions, or green peppers that are bigger than an infant's fist - go ahead! I dare you! And what about that chicken? It may be injected with flavorings and sodium-loaded additives at -- wait for it -- up to 15% of its weight! And it still dares to call itself 'natural!'
Third, once you hunt down enough food to hopefully feed three people for a month and survive the sticker shock long enough to schlub it home - it has to be hauled up the stairs and put away. That 20-pack of chicken pieces, 12-pack of pork chops, and those 5 lb. chubs of ground meat have to be cleaned and rewrapped in convenient, meal-size packages that will fit into the freezer. Produce has to be washed; pantry supplies need to be stowed away.
It's an all day event and the only reward is knowing that - with any luck - you won't have to do it again for 3 or 4 weeks. So, if you see Mark, tell him -- I haven't been here, you don't know where I went, and good luck with that grocery thing. (Me? I'm under the bed and I'm not coming out!)
Testing for Lead
Although the use of lead-based paint in housing was banned in 1978, it is still possible to be exposed to lead in the home. Houses and apartment buildings built before the ban are bought and sold, and rented all the time. There is no reason, unfortunately, to assume that all paint containing lead has been removed.
. . .
Read More Testing for Lead
Paint in good condition, even today, does not require testing and removal as it isn't a health threat. But, if there is any question - before starting any remodeling or renovation projects - a good lead test kit would be a good first step. Testing the soil around an older home or apartment is never a bad idea either, according to the EPA.
Now that I think about it, these kits would probably work on painted toys and other risky items we've been reading about in the news. It isn't just the walls and window sills that could be toxic these days.
Shopping for Electronics
Everyone knows that we are electronics junkies. But, we aren't fools. We don't pay full price for anything. Which can be good (saves money), or bad (refurbished systems are often a crap-shoot).
Still, it is fun to shop for discounts. Especially when there are items we desperately need. Just today I ran across a great PC set-up - tremendous speed, huge hard-drive - for a great price! Positively drooled all over my keyboard.
Figures it'd be at the end of the month when the disposable income has been ... well, completely disposed of.
Online Cash Shopping
It is possible to shop online without a credit card. There are debit cards that work just like a credit card - minus interest charges, monthly fees, and that pesky compounding debt thing. Shopping online with cash? That's a tough one.

eBillme attempts to help by connecting merchants, banks, and shoppers. It's an interesting idea, down to the online coupons and cash-back options. Just order, select eBillme to pay, and you're done. More or less.
To take advantage of online coupons, you have start shopping from eBillme. The list of participating merchants seems extensive, so it shouldn't keep you from finding what you want. And the search function works pretty well.
Now, the fun part. Click on a coupon / offer and eBillme connects to the merchant site. The one I tested popped up a code that had to be used. Be ready to write it down - it doesn't stay there long!
Once you make a selection and start checkout, choose eBillme as the payment method. This is where I ran into some confusion (my fault) - the coupon code didn't work on the merchant site. It had to be entered on the eBillme site.
The merchant I tested then bounced me to an eBillme screen that didn't really do anything. And, no matter what I did, I never made it to a place to finalize my order. A different merchant worked fine, but I wasn't trying to use a coupon on that one. (I thought the first problem was because I was just testing the process, but I'm not sure.)
If you can get the process to work, you should get bounced to eBillme, where you can enter your codes and email information. An invoice will be generated, presented on-screen, then emailed to you for payment. Use your bank's bill-pay system to make payment, which will be forwarded to the merchant, who will ship your order.
My guess? This is not going to happen as quickly as it sounds. Especially the first time. Don't have a bank account? Grab your cash (plus minimum $4.95 processing fee) and head for one of the walk-in payment centers. (We actually have one right across the street!)
These centers appear to take even longer - with a few more steps - between giving up your money and getting your order. Not exactly my first choice. But if you have no other options, it is one way to shop online.
Exploring DVR Options
One of our favorite channels has changed their schedule. Five nights (15-20 hours) of must-watch TV has devolved into four hours - at best - spread over three nights. And yet those four hours manage to conflict with other shows that we'd like to watch. Bottom line? Time to check out DVR options.
There are either/or selections, nice-but-not-critical applications, and very important functional considerations. In my quest for answers, DVR for DIRECTV got me started by explaining receiver options. Basically, there are two types of service: HD (high definition) and SD (standard definition). Since we have an HDTV, SD service doesn't sound like our best choice.
The specs, not counting image/sound quality differences, are fairly similar. HD-DVR seems to have more bells and whistles, which may be a ploy to grab viewers. Or may simply reflect consumer preferences for HD. Either way, HD receivers will record SD; the reverse is not true.
Another variable, which DVR for Time Warner Cable highlighted, is the ability to compensate for schedule changes. Some DVR systems will find and record programmed shows - in their entirety - even if they change days, times, or run longer than expected. Given network predilection for moving shows around, that could be an invaluable function.
And for sports fans, it may be a gotta-have-this option. Just imagine: you've avoided result broadcasts all day, waiting to sit back, relax, and enjoy that game or race. You get down to the wire - 2 minute warning / white-flag lap - only to find that your recording has been Heidi-bowled [1]. It's one thing when the network makes a bone-head broadcast decision. Quite another to inadvertently run out of recording time or memory.
Which leads me to a last, important component: storage capacity. I learned from the stats on DVR for Dish Network, that not all systems are the same. Some have much smaller hard drives, severely limiting how many programs can be recorded before viewing becomes mandatory. Like an enormous VHS tape or DVD, when you're out of room - you're out of programs.
This limitation is even more obvious where HD is concerned. High-definition files are larger than standard-definition and that estimated eighty hours of stored programming drops very quickly to thirty, or less. Unless viewers record today, watch tonight, and delete immediately - size of the hard drive moves to the top of the list.
So, for us, I'm thinking that storage is the decision, followed by HD over SD. Since we follow (or attempt to follow) a few shows that move around a lot, it might be nice to have some of the bells and whistles that eliminate neurotically memorizing the TV schedule, as well.
1. - On November 17, 1968, the Oakland Raiders, hosting the New York Jets, were down 32-29 with 65 seconds left in the game. Twelve seconds, three plays, and a fifteen-yard face-mask against the Jets later - the Raiders scored on a pass from Lamonica to Smith. Score: 32-36, Raiders. New York fumbled the kickoff at the 10-yard line; Oakland recovered and ran it in. Two touchdowns. Nine seconds. Raiders win - 32-43.
No one outside the stadium in Oakland saw it happen. At precisely 7:00pm, NBC came back from commercial and switched their coverage to the made-for-TV-movie, Heidi. The game was christened, and will (undoubtedly) be forever known as, The Heidi Bowl.
Sustainable Coffee
Thanks to a sale at the local grocery store, we are finally trying Yuban.
I know that environmental consciousness shouldn't wait for $2.00/off,
but - in our defense - it was more like $7.00/off and we're on a fixed
income.
Yuban is, to the best of my knowledge, one of the most 'green'
coffees in my supermarket. Not only are they partnered with and
certified by the Rainforest
Alliance, their canisters are made of 50% recycled materials, 35%
post-consumer recycled materials. And it tastes good, too.
Set Phasers on Copy!
Periodically, I go shopping for printer ink. It's not that we do a great deal of printing, but we've been using the same cartridges for a very long time. And, if you use something like the Xerox Phaser (108R00724) ink sticks, you know -- aw, heck! I gotta go there.
Which is more deadly - color or black-and-white? Does the wide-beam setting print legal-size, or just burn through a ream like, well like a Phaser through paper? Do you need a concealed-copy permit, for working after hours?
"Set phasers on copy - and good luck. Kirk out."1
1 - With apologies to Star Trek IV and Xerox, who I'm sure, has heard them all. (I just couldn't resist.)
Quick Afghan 001
Just two days ago, we announced the arrival of the first of our Quick Afghans, oddly enough, named Quick Afghan 002. This also means that, as of today, we are no longer offering two of our earliest designs ~ the Block Afghans. Perhaps saying good-bye to these 'old friends' made adding new ones more difficult. Who knows?
Happily, we managed to dot the i's and cross the t's in what seemed like record time, bringing the announcement and immediate availability of ~ Quick Afghan 001!

Quick Afghan 001
Similar to one of our Banded Afghan Styles, this Quick Afghan is crocheted in wide stripes, using three yarn colors.
The Primary color is used throughout the Afghan, combining with the Secondary color in the larger sections and with the Accent / Third color for narrower bands at the top, middle, and bottom.
One of the design hurdles we had to address was the Primary Color option. After much deliberation, and several less workable ideas, we decided to offer black and white as the - for lack of a better phrase - canvas on which the design will build.
Whether light or dark, we believe that all of our other yarn options will work extremely well with these base colors. Personally, I think this is going to become one of our most popular styles.
There are so many possibilities ~ whether combining tints and shades from the same color family (as in the pictures) or pulling contrasting colors, such as purple and yellow, or orange and blue. What about bright green and red with white for Christmas? or gold and orange with black for fall / Halloween?
See?! Almost endless possibilities!
Because the patterns were more time-consuming in our Block Afghans, the larger sizes took nearly 4 weeks to complete. This Quick Afghan should take about three. We're anticipating, and hoping, that delivery will actually be closer to only 2 weeks for most of the sizes.
I know that, in the middle of sweltering summer heat, the last thing anyone thinks about are warm, snuggly Afghans. But that is one of the reasons we're not as busy from April to September. Once the weather cools, the orders increase and, though rare, processing delays and order backlogs are always possible.
Order today and beat the crowd.
The How-Much-Per-Day?! Diet
I am sure that there are diets
that work out there. Some online programs are pretty well organized.
And, undoubtedly, the reliable ones offer a support system and exercise
programs for healthy weight loss.
Then, there's the one I ran across today. The one that suggests
committing a lifetime to the program and -- wait for it -- costs $23.00
per day for the pre-packaged meals and snacks. Over the course of a
month, that's almost $700.00 - per person!
We don't spend that much in a month to feed three people!
POS Scanner and Computer
Some days I am really sorry that I don't have a POS business. The barcode scanner options are so much fun - zap. (Okay, I watch too much sci-fi.) But, the point-of-sale computers, especially the touch-screen monitor set-ups, just make me want to drool.
While, admittedly, I don't need a cash drawer, receipt printer, and magnetic card reader - the stats on the computer are tremendous. Tremendously better than anything Mark and I are currently using, with or without touch-screen technology. Wonder if I could get a package deal, without the POS parts?
Living Room Lighting Needs
We are still trying to solve our living room lighting needs. Watching Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince proved that what we have doesn't work. But Designers Fountain Lighting started me thinking in a new direction and I think I may have solved some of the problems.
. . .
Solving Our Living Room Lighting Needs
To start with, I can't use the same floor lamp everywhere; though I did try, desperately. Next to the television, we need diffused lighting to brighten the room, but not blind everyone. Between the recliners, task lighting would be better - for reading, using the laptop, and crocheting, but not really to light the whole room because it would create a reflection in the TV. (Our issue with Harry Potter.)
Then, we have the desk. Mark really needs something that lights up the keyboard, but doesn't get in his way or create a glare on the monitor or shine back in his eyes. Ideally, a desk lamp that clips or clamps to the top shelf and has a movable arm that he can pull down or push out of the way.
No single style is going to do all of these things and, since we rent, we can't exactly rewire and mount fixtures on the walls. My best hope, at this point, is three different lamps in bronze or brass (personal preferences) with shades that are similar enough to complement each other and not look like we just threw something in the room. Oddly, not as difficult as I imagined.
Knobs, Handles, and Drawer Pulls
It's not that I actually went looking for plastic knobs today. More that I found them and became fascinated by the myriad of styles and types. Seriously, who knew there were so many options for handles, knobs, and pulls?
. . .
Read More Knobs, Handles, and Drawer Pulls
Or that there was an anti-microbial version? It should have been obvious - what else would medical labs and pharmaceutical companies use? Or, in theory, the food industry. Anywhere, I suppose with a stringent need for maintaining sanitary conditions.
All well and good, but don't they just wear off? Well, actually, some of these coatings last 7 years, up to 15 years ~ depending on cleaning methods. Amazing.
Dermatologist Acne Treatments
Although I do know better, I learned (again) that it's very important to be very specific when searching for a topic online. For example: dermatologist acne treatments are definitely not the same as dermatologist-recommended or -approved acne treatments. There are several tell-tale signs, once you hit a particular site.
. . .
Read More Dermatologist Acne Treatments
The main difference is that reputable sites offer a biography - with credentials - of the dermatologist. They also tend to be more than one page of 'cookie-cutter' reviews and links to affiliated product order forms. Lastly, authentic, medically-supported websites don't seem to offer the same three or four products that can be found on dozens of other sites.
It isn't necessarily easy to find the 'good' sites. But it is worth the effort. Trust me.
Wedding Favors
I was - actually - searching for something chocolate when I found the cutest collection of wedding accessories. My daughter had boxes of personalized candies at her reception, which I thought were so cute and really creative. But these chocolate bars and candied almonds really take it a step beyond.
Admittedly, they are not inexpensive and might be cost-prohibitive for a large wedding or a tight budget. Yet, I just fell in love with the "ingredients list" on the back of the candy bars. Not to mention, the bride and groom graphics on the almonds. Amazing!
Out With the Old / In With the New
I have been talking, for several months, about retiring Afghan styles and bringing in new designs. This has been a very difficult process for me, as I tend to fall in love with everything I crochet. (Just packing up an order can get me misty.)
After much soul-searching and a hard look at the bottom line, JMark Afghans, etc. has decided to discontinue the Block Afghan Styles - effective June 30, 2010. But, don't worry! We have a new style, with 2 options (so far), that we are really excited about!
Here is a sneak preview of Afghans-to-come!
. . .

New Quick Afghan 001
Our newest style is called the Quick Afghan because, well ... it is. Crocheted with 2 strands of yarn (and a really big crochet hook), these Afghans come together far quicker than many of our other sytles. This, virtually, cuts the time from order to shipping by one-third!
Quick Afghan 001 is similar to one of our Banded Afghan Styles. Made up of three colors, the Main and Accent Colors are worked together in the larger sections. The Main and Third colors combine for the narrower bands at the top, middle, and bottom.
New Quick Afghan 002
Quick Afghan 002 is a much simpler design - two colors, worked together throughout. It's a bit like a custom, you-design-it variegated yarn. (The image doesn't do justice to these colors - an amazing deep magenta and black.)
In fact, I made a larger version for my daughter and son-in-law (in purple and cream) as a wedding gift. Not to mention, a shawl and a couple of hats and scarves that I designed using double strands. Who knows? They may show up as new products, one of these days, as well.
Currently, we're working on pricing and shipping schedules for these new styles. But look for them to be available for order before the end of the month.
Outdoor Furniture
Remember that 'conversation' we were having about shopping, wishful thinking, and an intervention? Well, it may just be time. Because I have no budget for it, no need for it, nowhere to put it, and still have absolutely zero outdoor decor self-control.
I can spend hours designing, planning, and 'collecting' everything I would need for the perfect backyard setting. Firepits, umbrellas, tables, chairs, cushions, lighting, and - everything. How does one resist the call of the gorgeous?!
Gotta run! Need to get that winning lottery ticket and start shopping for a backyard!
Finding a Great Bargain
Yes, I am a shopaholic and could probably use an intervention. Luckily, for our budget, most of my shopping is of the when-I-hit-the-lottery wishful variety. Although I am not totally immune to the siren song of the best buy offering.
Granted, we have little room and pretty much everything we need to survive in this world. But, what if I'm missing the deal of a lifetime?! Hey, it could happen!
Pregnancy and Vitamins
Back when I was pregnant, about a thousand years ago, prenatal vitamins (as I recall) were a prescription item from my doctor. I knew that what I was taking had what the baby and I needed to keep us both healthy. These days, I don't know what young mothers do, especially those without health insurance; though there are a number of sites that offer plenty of advice.
. . .
Read More Pregnancy and Vitamins
Frankly, that makes me a little nervous. The average supplement is an unregulated crap-shoot, filled with ingredients that may be beneficial, possibly aren't, and could be (at the extreme end) dangerous. But prenatal vitamins effect two lives - for better or worse.
A pregnant woman has very specific needs, to ensure proper development of her baby and supporting her own system. Knowing what amounts of which vitamins and minerals are medically recommended makes getting the right supplement much easier. I don't know if there is much variance from product to product, but I certainly would prefer a checklist for comparison, if I were doing the shopping.
Guidelines exist and are fairly easy to find. Personally, I'd trust my doctor over the average this-is-what-you-should-buy website. At the very least, advice from a medical source (Cleveland Clinic, WebMD, and Mayo Clinic come to mind) - with no financial interest in a particular brand - is a good starting point.
Compare Insurance Rates
Not all products and services are created equal. Which is why getting, for example, insurance quotes can be a bit problematic. And seriously confusing.
. . .
Read More Compare Insurance Rates
With auto insurance, one has to consider deductibles as part of the overall cost. Sure, the monthly premiums may be impressive - until you have a claim. Coming up with several hundred dollars, or more, may make getting back on the road almost impossible.
What about homeowner's / renter's coverage? If, heaven forbid, you experience a loss, are you covered for the replacement cost of your valuables? How does one determine what that should be?
A good agent asks these questions and offers guidance that ensures their customers can live with their decisions. If they don't ask, perhaps it's time to reconsider the relationship. Or at least explore your options.
Timeshares
I promise - I was not really looking for information on timeshares. But when I stumbled across it, I had to ask myself if people are still buying these things or if there is a massive cry of "sell my timeshare!" circling the globe. Seriously, was this ever a good idea?
It must be, or they wouldn't be available. For example, there must be people who want to spend a small fortune for a 1-bedroom in AZ or TX - in June. Or, perhaps, ~$10,000 for one week - every other year - in MA, in January.
Or not.
Shopping for Health-related Items
Periodically, I look for sites that sell health-related items - diabetic supplies, walk in tubs, orthotics, pill reminders, wheelchairs - as part of my other full-time job.
There are a lot of sites, products, and junk out there. Just like supplements, anti-wrinkle creams, and acne concoctions, so many websites are just a collection of links. They may be sorted by product or manufacturer, but rarely are they more than a grab at a percentage of the sale.
Happily, there are others who make, sell, and stand behind their goods. They are the ones who keep me from giving up.
Adult Acne Treatments
What many people, and websites, fail to realize is that treating adult acne is much, much different than treating adolescent acne. Some of the causes may be the same. But the basic skin differences are huge.
Medications designed for super-oily teenaged skin are far too harsh for drier, more delicate adult skin. Before trying 'recommended' products, it is critical to make certain that they weren't designed for your 15-year-old. Otherwise, adults run the risk of creating more skin problems than they had to begin with.
Reviewing the Reviewers
Oooh, I just love a good diet pill review! Especially the ones that offer guidelines that are, virtually, impossible to achieve. Where, in the world, do I start?
. . .
Read More Reviewing the Reviewers
Don't purchase, unless you:
Oh, wait - there's only one consistent recommendation: rely on reviews! My problem with that is the questionable quality and tendency to simply reuse a manufacturer's hype. The only information the consumer receives is what the maker wants them to know - in order to encourage sales.
In all fairness, there are sites that write their own content. Some even seem to look at the products before they comment. A definite improvement over cookie-cutter, affiliate-driven, give-us-your-money websites.
However, as it is virtually impossible (or at least cost prohibitive) to access clinical trial results and professional articles, product information is still mostly 'borrowed' from company sites and other reviewers. At least the more honest provide valuable help, such as 'outing' auto-ship and you-open-it-you-bought-it product return scams.
Supplement Reviews
Maybe I'm getting cranky in my old age. Or perhaps constant misrepresentation of the facts has tarnished my optimism. Take, for example, supplement reviews.
I have yet to find a site offering product reviews that actually reviews anything. My, um, favorites? The ones that have links to 'our reviews' that actually connect to the supplement or product site.
Those are almost as good as the ones asking for customer reviews, but providing no way to comment. Yup, definitely getting cranky.
False Product Hits
My latest quest: why an organic face cream? Sadly, this is probably going to take a little longer than anticipated. Half of the sites that pop up in a search have absolutely nothing to do with the product. They're just trying to capitalize on keywords and get searchers onto their sites.
Not illegal. Not helpful, either. In my hunt for information on eye creams, I stumbled across a site that was loaded to the gills with eye cream keywords. Good find, right?
Nope. Not an eye cream on the page.
Eye Cream Truths
I am not exactly against anti-wrinkle creams. But I do have a serious problem with, as http://www.eyecream.org starts to say, eye creams that don't work around the eyes. Sadly, they don't go further. They just publish a great headline and pimp the products that are paying them for clicks. (Or so it, certainly, seems.)
. . .
Read More Eye Cream Truths
They don't discuss that many creams, designed to fight wrinkles, contain ingredients that should not be used near the eyes. If you look at the caveat, don't-do-this, and we-recommend-against-this messages - which are not always easy to find - you'll see that the sites telling you to buy 'this' are not operating in anyone's best interest.
Virtually all of the sites that pop up in a search don't admit that. They simply want you to buy their affiliate's products. It takes investigation into ingredients to find out what's safe. And since the government doesn't require full disclosure, it is not an easy job.
Area Rugs
I mentioned, recently, several of my editing-related 'addictions,' including shoes, sweets, and fish ponds. One (of several) that I failed to note? I absolutely love area rugs, leaning toward Persian and Oriental styles.
Okay, there are some traditional patterns that are just gorgeous, too. Not really big on most of the ones classified as 'modern.' But with the eclectic collection of mix-and-match furnishings we own, almost anything works. Just as long as the colors are compatible.
It's not a new interest, but it did intensify greatly - thanks to an editor friend. He buys rugs for his business and let me take a virtual shopping trip with him. Now, that was fun!
. . .
Read More Area Rugs
He'd post a link to a page of rugs and ask me to pick three, or four, that I would buy. Now I'm not trying to pat myself on the back here (okay, maybe a little, because it seriously surprised me). With the exception of one or two, I consistently chose the same ones that he had either already ordered or was going to order for the store.
Approaching something in that way - Would I offer it to my customers? And if I did, would it sell? - tends to alter one's shopping perspective. Especially for someone who's criteria usually boils down to "Oooh! Pretty!
Now I Want a Fish Pond
Among my other online activities, I am an editor for a couple of directories - finding, describing, and adding sites. It's a great deal of fun and definitely broadens my interests. Unfortunately, it also makes me crave sweets, new shoes, and - probably most odd - a fish pond.
It does, however, help explain why I'm looking for a fish pond filter, when I don't even have space for a fish bowl. You have to admit - yes, you do - that these ponds are absolutely beautiful. I can easily imagine sitting here and relaxing away a Sunday afternoon, just watching the fish.
Aw, crap! I mean carp!! Now I have to go Koi shopping!
Yes, I do!
Wrinkle Creams
I was looking at some of the "best anti wrinkle cream" sites and got caught up reading a quite funny debate over one particular product. Never actually did find what I was looking for. But I had a great time, anyway.
It all started because I was trying to find some information on Acetyl Hexapeptide-3. This ingredient is showing up in a lot of creams. Naturally, I wanted to know what it was and if it could do what it claimed.
After lots of searching, I ran across a forum discussion that seemed to really know what was going on. Then, I got down to the last few posts where 2 people were convinced that a third was only complaining, because her products didn't use this peptide. From there is just devolved into hysteria.
Must say, it's been a long time since I laughed that hard. Unfortunately, I still don't know if Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 actually works.
Desk Replacement
One might think that, by now, I'd have found a workable solution for replacing our gigantic desk. One - or more - would be mistaken. Finding the right size, price, storage options has not been easy, or fun.
I lean toward modern office furniture, for the clean lines and (theoretically) smaller footprint. Desks are pretty easy; tons of options in the right size range. It's the storage issue that's killing me.
We have, to put it mildly, just too much stuff crammed onto our current unit. At one point, I actually made a bunch of boxes in a bunch of sizes to hold cords, discs, supplies. It helped, but now I need a new desk with tons of shelving.
Guess I'd best just keep hunting. Some day - I promise - there will be a picture of our new desk. Really!
Joint Supplements
Having spent a great deal of time this month crocheting baby clothes, I am more focused than usual on joint pain. Apparently, I have - at the very least - developed some difficulties in the joints of my hands. Without seeing a doctor, I can't say it's arthritis; but it certainly feels like so many articles have described.
This pain led me to revisit discount supplements, including those for joint problems. As I suspected, if you turn around twice there are 12 new products claiming to resolve all of your physical issues - from weight loss to joint inflammation and pain to colon cleansing. Yet, there really aren't any new, per se, miracles.
Simply new combinations of the items that don't necessarily, in and of themselves, work. Guess I'll go take an NSAID and put up the hooks for a while.
Find Me A Deal
While not actively pursuing a memory upgrade for our two computers, I do
keep my eye out for a great sale.
The only problem - so far - is I keep getting distracted by all of the
other ... {ooh, shiny!!}
Ummm. Where was I? Oh, yes - great deals.
I wasn't actually looking to upgrade any of our software. It works,
though some of it is about 8 years old. Then, I tripped over a deal I
couldn't refuse.
A utility that we have on all of our computers, for less than we paid 7
years ago. Just can't ignore ... {squirrel!}
Is KFC Destroying Forests?
I was reading a petition, protesting subsidies for 'dirty fuels,' when an article/petition about KFC packaging caught my attention. And it isn't only the Colonel that is a problem.
Let's start with some basic facts about trash in the United States:
. . .
Continue Reading: Is KFC Destroying Forests?
- The average American generates approximately 4.4 lbs/day, 56 tons/year of trash;
- Almost 1/3 of that trash is packaging;
- Nearly 900 Million trees are harvested annually to feed paper and pulp mills;
- Americans:
- Consume 1/3 (33%) of the Earth's timber and paper:
- Total less than 1/20 (< 5%) of the world's population;
- Paper and paper products comprise 37.5% of American waste;
Of those 900,000,000 trees felled each year, it appears that most are acquired through clearcutting in the Southern United States for processing by International Paper (IP), the largest paper manufacturer in the US and the world. With blatant disregard, wetlands are drained, endangered forests are logged, and natural woodlands are replaced with tree farms. Nurseries do not support indigenous life or replace lost ecosystems.
Many fast-food companies and large chains (Starbucks, McDonald's, Random House, WalMart), understand their responsibility and have begun instituting sustainable paper usage policies and programs. Others, like KFC and Yum! Brands, continue to drag their feet, showing no desire to increase use of PCR (post-consumer recycled) packaging or reduce packaging or use products from sustainably managed forests.
International Paper has a large presence in the United States and the world and could, should they choose, adopt production strategies that would make them a leader in sustainable paper manufacturing. They could set the standard for all others to follow. So far, they have chosen to set the standard that should be avoided - at all costs.
The companies that continue to support IP by purchasing its paper products - and overpackaging their own goods - are as culpable as the manufacturer in the destruction of forest ecosystems. Trees and the air that they clean are not an infinite resource. Even replanting, as IP does (plantation-style), is insufficient to maintain fragile biomes and endemic species of flora and fauna.
It is time to address these issues at the sources - with petitions, letters, and consumer dollars. The links in this post offer a great starting point to make your voice heard. Please join me in saying: "Until I see you green, you're not seeing my 'green'."
Wedding Invitations
In the interest of our forests and our environment, I had to ask. Are
there 'green' wedding invitations
out there in the webverse? Happily, the answer is "Yes, there are."
One product, that I thought was ingenious, offers a favor that is more
than environmentally-friendly. It comes with a plantable card, embedded
with wildflower seeds. The entire card is planted, creating a visual
reminder of the wedding couple's special day.
Nice to see companies (and hopefully brides and grooms) thinking outside
the box. Oh, so far outside the box! There's even confetti that
dissolves in water - no litter, no mess, no danger to wildlife.
Baby Showers
I was wondering (for a variety of reasons) just what baby showers are like these days. Thank Heaven! maternity clothes finally changed. And baby shower invitations are much broader in scope and style than they were in my day. But what exactly does one do at a baby shower, these days?
. . .
Read More Baby Showers
Since I barely recall having or attending a baby shower, I was amused to find that there are still silly games and favors. Most seemed like fun. Some suggestions were more practical than others: creating scrapbook pages or redeemable coupons sounded like great activities. The creativity behind some of the ideas for couples showers that I ran across was actually inspiring.
Do most people still hold the shower before the baby's birth? or are they waiting? Waiting always made more sense to me. That way the baby doesn't spend the first six months of his/her life dressed in the somewhat limited range of non-gender-specific items on the market.
Although, frankly, the baby doesn't care. And Mom and Dad are going to be too bleary-eyed from lack of sleep to even notice what color sleeper they just pulled out of the dresser. So, maybe before-or-after isn't that important, after all.
I {Heart} Luggage
It's the funniest thing. I don't really travel. In fact, I haven't been out of Phoenix since August/September 2008. Hate to fly; buses take forever; have no car.
And, yet?! I love, love, love to shop for luggage. Especially the ones, like Titan luggage, with the handles and wheels and a million little compartments - strong enough to withstand anything.
It's not that I imagine going anywhere; that's the odd part. I just have a 'thing' for luggage (and watches, and cigarette lighters, and coffee mugs). I wonder if that means something.
Guess I'll have to dig out my book on ... hmmm? Exactly which book would cover the meaning behind a luggage compulsion?
Oooh, Fun Stuff!
Okay, I am officially in big trouble. I have been window shopping again and just fell in love designing promotional products for JMark Afghans, etc. The ideas, and items, are everywhere and they are tremendous fun.

From the sublime: tote bags made of recycled materials; to the simple: magnetic peel-and-stick blanks that hold business cards. This is just heaven. I have always including a little surprise in every package I ship. Now I have even more creative options.
I've thought about key chains and magnets before, as they are small and quick to make. However, since I use them constantly, tote bags are much more exciting to me. Eliminating plastic bag pile-up while using bags from recycled material is perhaps the best idea, so far.
Now, to design a new one-, maybe two-color logo, enlarge to something near humongous, buy a silk-screen machine, and get some blank bags. Oh, yes. I'm in big trouble!
Rheumatoid Arthritis
For the last several months, I have been experiencing increased pain and swelling in the joints of my hands. Following a couple of dramatic dislocations (several years apart), my knees aren't very happy with me either. Needless to say, I'm doing more reading about arthritis and joint function these days.
Undoubtedly, at my age, I'm not alone in experiencing these issues. And those seeking to take advantage of health changes in an aging population are noticing. Subsequently, there are an increasing number of sites offering, for example, rheumatoid arthritis relief information.
. . .
Read More Rheumatoid Arthritis
RA treatment is not simple and is not the same as treatment for Osteoarthritis (OA). A class of drugs called DMARDs (Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs) are effective at reducing RA symptoms - just like aspirin and other anti-inflammatories. But, where pain medications stop, DMARDs start; working to slow or stop joint damage.
These prescription medications are not available online. And the treatments / supplements found online are - at best - not effective. For example, studies have failed to prove that glucosamine offers any improvement in joint pain or function. Yet, glucosamine-containing supplements and products continue to be, for lack of a better term, pushed at online consumers.
Worse? Many items on these websites are not even designed to treat RA. But, that doesn't stop supplier affiliates. If a condition is even slightly arthritis-related, they publish their 'recommendation' and tout their product.
Then, there are the mystery pills.
As usual, these are the items that may be the most dangerous. One that I looked at contains a number of ingredients, usually found in homeopathic treatments. They are joint-specific and natural, and may offer relief at very specific dosage amounts. However, they are also quite possibly toxic at high levels and should not be used indiscriminately.
No arthritis medications / treatments should be taken arbitrarily. Even anti-inflammatories can have serious side-effects. Bottom line?
Leave arthritis treatment to the professionals.
Blood Pressure Monitors
It's difficult to pick which was the most frightening symptom /
complication of Mark's liver disease. There were ascites (fluid in the
abdominal cavity), jaundice (yellow eyes and skin), and clotting
problems. He also developed hepatic encephalopathy (reduced brain
function), tachycardia (extremely rapid pulse) and high blood pressure.

We spent a lot of time checking his pulse and blood pressure, so the VA
furnished a home monitoring unit. Unlike the Wristech
blood pressure monitor, which I found online today, the monitor we
have goes around the upper arm. It needs to be positioned just right to
get an accurate reading.
Under normal circumstances, not a problem. We still use it regularly
without any difficulty. But, when you're dealing with a patient who is
suffering from balance problems and is almost completely unable to
follow directions, simpler is better. Much, much better
Being able to slide a unit over his wrist, hit start, and be done - that
would have been a life-saver.

Solutions for Acne
Chasing down reviews of acne
solutions isn't exactly a full-time job. But it does seem to occupy
more of my time these days. I can't do a product search, without running
full speed into someone's review site.
Sadly, some of the sites leave one, shall we say, wanting more. Just
today I stumbled across one that has absolutely no information. With
curiosity driving me, I went on an investigative trek into the
nether-regions of the Internet.
Aftar a couple of hours, I was more confused than when I started.
. . .
Read More Solutions for Acne
At some point in time, there was content on the website. (I know,
because I found an old cache of the front page.) Then, magically,
everything seemed to vanish.
Other, similar URLs also have little content. But most of those are up
for sale. Someone smelled money to be made from a particular domain
name, would be my guess. And, since there are different owners, the odor
of profit must have been rather strong.
But, the site I was chasing down didn't seem to be for sale, or parked,
or intentionally abandoned. It was, in fact, just updated in February.
Whether they gave up or lost their host or got hacked (although that
seems unlikely), all that is left is the bare-bones beginning of a
WordPress blog.
Rather sad.
Exercise Equipment Needs
Recently, I've been doing a great deal of online window-shopping for
exercise equipment. Because I'm not outfitting a full gym, I've avoided
looking at commercial
fitness equipment. Size, weight, and cost keep professional machines
out of my range. Or so I thought.
While we have space issues, I discovered that price isn't automatically
a problem. Refurbished equipment, coming out of the local workout club,
can offer features not available on items designed for the home user.
And, because the gym is anxious to upgrade their treadmills and stair
climbers, the used machines may not be much more expensive.
I can't say how the quality compares. But it might well be worth a
closer look.
TV Stands Aren't Just for TVs
Three people in a one-bedroom apartment requires creative thinking. Especially when the three people tend to be packrats The level of ... ummmm ... stuff quickly becomes overwhelming.
With the living room doubling as a bedroom, and containing a huge computer desk, we had to think vertical and quick. Using TV stands to get things off the floor was our first step. This had the immediate advantage of creating storage space under, for example, our television.

By throwing a cover (half of a spare set of draperies) over the stand, we had a hiding place for a myriad of sins not fit for public viewing. A similar cover over the dining table, made another stashing spot. So far, so good. Things were disappearing at a rapid pace.
What I didn't anticipate, however, was how TV viewing would change when we lifted it up off the floor. It's fantastic! Due to the position of the desktop and torchieres, we had been squinting through odd lighting and reflections for months.
Now, every seat in the room has a perfect view - no glare, no reflected monitors! Amazing how solving our storage problem fixed an issue we didn't realize we had.
San Diego Homes
It's that time of year again. When others dream of opening up the house and cleaning out the winter, we dream about moving somewhere cooler. The one stumbling block is the fact that neither of us could tolerate a 'normal' (northern) winter.
So, in my annual gotta-get-out-before-the-heat-arrives exercise, I threw a dart at a map and decided to see if there were any interesting (read: affordable) San Diego homes for sale. Easy enough, right? Wrong!
. . .

Did you know that there are zillions of neighborhoods that are part of San Diego? I didn't! I figured that one moved to San Diego, period. But, oh no!
There is central, downtown, east county, north county coastal, north county inland, San Diego coastal, and - if that weren't enough to consider - south county real estate. Then, there are the areas within these areas. Vista, Rancho Santa Fe, La Mesa, Little Italy, Columbia, San Carlos - they just go on and on.
How, in the world, is a person supposed to know where to look?! North and move south? East and move west? Central and fan out from there? My head is spinning already!
Guess I'd better make another pot of coffee and a big breakfast. I'm gonna be at this for a good long while.
Fighting Wrinkles
An evening spent reading wrinkle cream reviews ends up creating more questions than answers. All products claim to work wonders; that their ingredients are the best. But are they?
There's no argument that collagen, which the young have in abundance, is what keeps skin smooth and supple. Where to get it, or more accurately, how to increase collagen production is the real issue. It's also where opinions, products, and web sites diverge - dramatically.
. . .

From what I've read, using products with collagen in them doesn't do any good. The skin can't absorb collagen, so it simply sits on the face. Stimulating production is the key, and there are - actually - many ways to do it. At a variety of prices.
Dermatologists use laser treatments, peels, and microdermabrasion to stimulate the dermis, the middle layer of the skin where collagen lives. Naturally, these are not inexpensive treatments, but they are going to be more effective than department store versions. On the plus side, some of these treatments, which require more than one visit, are effective for years.
Topical solutions vary as well, from source to source. Consistently, however, articles mention creams containing peptides to be effective. And, typically, no two articles agree on which peptides are best.
My favorite? The article that lists dozens of foods that stimulate collagen and elastin production. It helps that I happen to love greens, cantaloupe, citrus, asparagus, cashews, pecans, almonds, and avocado.
Darn it! Now I'm hungry!
Ordering Wrinkle Creams
One common complaint I've read about ordering some acne treatments and
weight-loss supplements is the automated ordering process. The customer
opts for a (usually) 14-day free trial; just pay shipping and handling.
Websites may or may not explain that, unless the account is cancelled
within that 14 days, the product will automatically ship at full price.
They also don't mention that the 14 days starts from the moment the
order is placed. And full price is never cheap.
Although more common with other products, some wrinkle
creams pull the same tricks. I know. They got me a couple of years
ago.

Now, don't get me wrong. It's a perfectly good product. Two steps,
applied right after cleansing, you can actually feel the skin on your
face firm up.
Or maybe it's just an astringent in the mix, tightening up the pores.
But, I could feel it work - the few times I remembered to use it. All in
all, I was rather impressed ... until I got the charges on my card.
Then, I was simply angry.
When I contacted customer service, they insisted that I had agreed to
all of their fine print when I place my trial order. Nope; sure didn't.
In fact, I will go to my grave confident that there was zero warning of
the automatic shipping policy.
Happily, they did refund the charges quite quickly. And I learned a
valuable lesson. Ain't no such thing as free.
Germ-Fighter Pillows
Our household is perhaps more sensitive to pollutants than the average
family. With Mark on immunosuppressants, missing most of his left lung,
and suffering from diabetes and seasonal asthma - dust, dander, germs,
and allergens are a big no-no for us. After seeing these allergy
pillows, I realized that we aren't doing everything we can to help
him breathe more easily.
To start with, our pillows don't have anything to keep us from exhaling
moisture into them, giving germs and bacteria a nice moist environment.
Worse yet, we're inhaling any mold, dust, and allergens that are in
them. Healthy Dreams Germ-fighter pillows, on the other hand, have a
bio-filter membrane and permanently treated fabric.
. . .

As the name explains, the membrane filters the air going into, and the
air coming out of, the pillow. And this is no ordinary filter. The
Micrenza bio-filter has the filtering equivalency of an N95-rated
surgical mask; the type used in situations where TB exposure
protection is required.
If that weren't enough, the pillow fabric is treated with an
EPA-registered - permanent - antimicrobial. Definitely above and
beyond the average pillow or pillow protector. And certainly more
health benefits than a monthly trip through the washer.
Another benefit of these allergy pillows? No trips through the washer.
Simply spot clean with a damp cloth and allow to air dry.
Trust me, I have washed pillows, more than once, in hot water
with a little bleach. I have also cleaned feathers and fiberfill out
of my washing machine! Egads! What a pain in the neck!
Since Mark is also sensitive to bleach, this is not a perfect
solution, either. We use anti-allergen carpet shampoo every month and
have ionizing air filters in every room. I think it's time to address
the quality of the air we breathe while we sleep.
And, to be perfectly honest, I would be very happy to wake up without
sinus congestion and headaches.
Colon Cleansing: Good Idea?
Okay, I'm all for anything that will keep me healthy - or get me healthier. But a colon cleanse detox may just be a bit much. Then again, who knows?
In the spirit of open-mindedness, let's look at the claims and - if possible - the facts. Not much is really known about the benefits of colon cleansing. Although, if I recall correctly Dr. John Kellogg (as in the cereal family) was an almost rabid proponent of colonics and enemas at the sanitarium where he practiced.
The basic purpose of these cleansings, then and now, is to eliminate toxins in the intestines. It was and is believed that these toxic byproducts of the digestive process are reabsorbed into the system, causing a variety of health problems. Logically, it's a valid concept. In actuality, less so.
. . .

Physically, cleansing doesn't appear to be necessary. The colon and the liver already work to detoxify waste from food. There are mucus membranes in the colon that block substances from getting back into the body. And, according to a couple of sources, the colon sheds old cells every three days or so.
As with anything else, there are risks. Taking laxatives can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Irrigation has its own risks. Anything used long-term can alter the balance of good bacteria in the system and create more problems than it solves.
That said, I have to admit that I don't always feel well when I'm not regular. But, frankly, I think I'll just drink more water and go for the whole grains.
Skin Care Options
Even though I know that foods do not contribute to breakouts, I also
know that massive quantities of chocolate aren't good for my skin. Not
because chocolate is bad, but because the caffeine and sugar combination
tends to bother my system. I get edgy; I get pimples.
Since I was thinking about the ramifications of (really, really)
enjoying Valentine's Day goodies, I decided to do a little investigation
into best skin
care advice. I've been thinking about getting some kind of toner or
astringent for the good ol' oil factory on my forehead and chin. What I
used as a teenager, is just too strong (if they even make it anymore)
for my aging skin.
Sadly, the first place I found - which seemed to cover everything from
day creams to toners to eye creams - had no content. Nothing. All of the
links went nowhere.
The site had been revised / changed / moved last May, but was apparently
never updated. Very sad. It looks like a great start.
Oh, well. Guess I'll just have to push on and find what I'm looking for
somewhere else.
Weight Loss Product Reviews
It isn't difficult to find a website offering weight loss product reviews. (Or any kind of product review, for that matter.) The real question is: Are they honestly reviewing products? Or are they affiliate marketers of those same supplements?
(Don't get me wrong - I have nothing against affiliate marketing. There are several companies with which I do business as an affiliate. But, then, I'm not offering unbiased reviews of their products. I just like what they sell and offer their products to my customers, as well.)
Over time, I've run across several 'review' sites that are more than a little misleading. My all-time favorites, and there are a bunch, are the ones that mirror each other - down to typos and misprints. The top 3 or 5 or whatever combination they choose are always the same few products.
. . .
Read More Weight Loss Product Reviews
I suppose you could say that they're the top supplements across the board, because they are the best. You could. I probably wouldn't, but I'm funny that way.
My problem is that so many weight loss products don't have any supporting clinical trials to back up their claims. The best I've found is that some of the ingredients listed may have some valid claim to supporting fat-burning or weight loss. The ingredients themselves - not the combination in any particular product.
There is no monitoring or control over how much of what is included in a particular formula. And, when you're buying something over-the-counter, there is no medical support to ensure safe usage. Unless the consumer actually works with their doctor to monitor weight loss and side effects. I doubt many people do.
Take what you read with a grain of salt, as it were. Some sites do offer, what appear to be, unbiased reviews of certain products. It is certainly conceivable, though, that those are not the products they are (possibly) being paid to promote.
Wrinkle Removers
Since my last birthday, I've been making lots of jokes about wrinkle creams. It's tough to get up in the morning, look in the mirror, and not see the 20- or even 30-year-old face I (for some reason) still expect to see. But wrinkle cream?
Admittedly, not all moisturizers are the same. They run the gamut from simple face cream to instant wrinkle remover, and everything in between. But which work? Which are safe?
It's tough to know. And, since there are new products every day (or at least new websites promoting products), I try to review regularly. Imagine my surprise when I saw a product, previously touted as the best weight-loss pill, offered as a skin treatment. You know I had to check it out.

Ah, yes! The Super Foods pill! I remember Lipovox!
It does everything but wash the dishes and scrub the floors. Yet, who came up with this magic pill?! How do you track down the original? That's the fun part.
If you search "I worked with one of the largest Nutraceautical company's in the world and had them find the HIGHEST Concentrates of All 10 Super Foods." you will find no less than 121 sites sharing this story - complete with the typographical errors. There is one 'official' site, but who knows. Half of them look like copies of each other.
The bottom line?! There is no scientific proof that this pill does anything - except empty your wallet. Although, chances are - if you consumed a sufficient quantity of these 'Super Foods' - you would probably notice a benefit. But does this pill provide it?
If you've actually tried Lipovox - please leave your comments below. (Note: Moderators reserve the right to expose spurious claims.)
